View Full Version : Audio over HDMI?

Just thinking about the monitoring situation and came up with a question:

I am not sure if I remember anyone saying if the HDMI will carry audio as well or just the video. For monitoring purposes, I think it would be a great way to reduce the cables off the camera. Ideas?

If this has been stated before--then I apologise. It's not from not reading enough--it's from reading too much--as, though I am a recovering DVXUser/Redforum-aholic, I have firmly become a Reduser-aholic. My wife came in last night, looked over my shoulder and said, "Is there no other website on the internet? That's all I ever see you reading!"

This would be a great feature for me as I plan to have a camera van with a monitor in it parked close by and whenever possible tethered to the RedOne by HDMI anyway. Being able to monitor audio at the van with just that one cable would be sweeeeeet.

Don't forget that HD-SDI is also capable of carrying audio (does anyone remember if Red have said whether this will be implemented). If it is, then a single BNC to a van is even easier than an HDMI. If you wanted to use an HDMI monitor in the van, then something like a Blackmagic HDLink will convert HD-SDI to HDMI (or DVI if you want to use say a 23" Cinema Display) and also has audio monitoring outputs.

HDMI does support both audio and video, although I'm not sure if it's implemented in Red a different way. Having either BNC or HDMI options for monitoring both video and audio would be great! One single cable either way and more options for monitors too.

The principal differences between HDMI and DVI are that HDMI carries audio as well as video, and uses a different type of connector, but both use the same encoding scheme. That's why a DVI source can be connected to an HDMI monitor, or vice versa, with a DVI/HDMI cable, with no need for a converter box.

HDMI always has the capability to carry audio and video...its in the spec.

If you're shooting 1080p with RED One, and you have a 1080p capable HDTV with an HDMI bus, you can review the RED footage sitting in your living room, using a remote (if RED One comes with one). Very cool...

HDMI can carry audio and video, but it doesn't mean the Red One will do it necessarily--I would hope so, but I'd really like to get confirmation from someone RED!

In this post http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/showthread.php?p=564167#post564167 Stuart mentions audio over HDMI. However he specifically does not confirm or deny (as is the Red way) whether it will be implemented.

One of the reasons that we chose to use HDMI as a connector on the camera was because (just like HD-SDI) it can support both HD video resolutions and multi-channel audio. More details on this a bit later ......
