Hi all,
I've been working with build16 clips with Crimson but pretty much working fine, but happy to hear for the update! Now that more jobs we have and we have to work quickly with footage, editing with proxies and use Crimson to conform and output only good takes with REDCINE makes most sense.
Ian, I reported 29.97 frame rate problem before, but with build16 clips, the roudtrip xml started working for some reasons. Crimson helped us finishing jobs for at least four major TV commercials.
By the way, I decided to sell of of my Panasonic P2 equipment if anyone interested.

Places I've been, things that have happened to me. Helps me remmember exactly what I was thinking about when I was working on something.

I spoke too soon, a better expression is:
([A-Z][0-9]*)_(C[0-9]*)_([0-9]{4}[[A-Z]|[0-9]]{2})
becomes:
\1_\2_\3_001.R3D
Built-in manyana
Edit: I think it's ready today, in fact it's up now.

Fantastic, Ian! Thanks.
I see you have addressed issues of construct errors in Redcine. That's great--my last two xml loads had this problem.
A problem I am having, though (I downloaded 9.4)-- I cannot get Crimson to export my Redcine XML--unexpected error occurs. Is this unique to me?

Well I'm not sure. I realize what Crimson really needs is deep brain surgery on it's XML engine. This is in the works but a big time consuming change. Do you want to send me the XML of your project?

Ian,
I'm doing another project tomorrow and want the DIT to make all the downres files for me so that doing the pre-crimson edit is smooth.
Before I was using your droplet to downres everything to 1k proxies, but I just went through and updated RedAlert and RedCine and noticed there is now RedRushes. What are you doing for your downres'ing? Using the 1k droplet or using RedRushes and making 720p or SD files?

Thanks Ian! I actually reverted to the previous version and am manually editing the xml to include the full path name to the files.
Now that I am done with all my projects, I will upgrade to the newest versions of everything I have and start all over again. I'll let you know if it is still getting the error when I get all this set up.

I still retime files in RedAlert and then drop the newly generated reference files into a 1K droplet. However, I don't see a problem using Redrushes with Crimson Sean, it seems like a good way to go.

If you load a file into redalert you can adjust the settings and most of the settings will be reflected in the new QuickTime reference files that you create. Doing this just means prettier proxies that look closer to what you want just while you are cutting. It's not neccessary since you will be returning to raw, it's just helpful for the director and editor, and also because screeners are often made straight off the cut.

I noticed two issues after install. When I try to add a location for my R3D search, I am not allowed to. Fortunately, it looks like you improved the way in which Crimson searches for files because if I just hit MATCH, it located what I need.
Second issue is when I go to Export a Redcine XML, I get an error message reading,
An unexpected error has occured
(TypeError: unsupported operand type(s) for -: 'NoneType' and 'NoneType')
I'll report more as I continue to dig
Thank You

I'm getting the same issue as Richard as well with the new release of 0.9.4B.
"Second issue is when I go to Export a Redcine XML, I get an error message reading,
An unexpected error has occured
(TypeError: unsupported operand type(s) for -: 'NoneType' and 'NoneType')"
My XML is smaller than 50 clips, and when I select "Use Complete Takes", it fills the "Render In" and "Render Out" with appropriate data. However, when I try and select "Use In Out Points", it doesn't change the values. Ideas?
George Costakis
08-04-2008, 11:43 PM
Also, the "Render In" and "Out" values are defaulted to "None", when the XML is imported and "matched".
I Bloom
08-05-2008, 03:07 AM
We've been dealing with this issue. 9.4C is being released this morning to attempt to resolve the problem. It has to do in part with the match status of all clips.
By the way, there is no 50 clip limit in Crimson, I'd like to put that myth to rest.

Ok so... I'm following the Crimson Workflow... using cowboy intermediate... everything is going well, but when I export my clips to quicktime from Redcine it is exporting them as 1 clip... i don't want this... i want everything exported as separate clips... can this be done?
I've never dealt with dpx files and don't plan on doing it anytime soon...
this is a time-sensitive edit...

In the output name of redcine you need to click input file names (the #F command) This will give you individual files.

More common would be to export it for colorcorrection...
I Bloom
09-09-2008, 09:53 AM
Francois,
Redcine is not a very good program for color correction because it has no video scopes or support for an external monitor, and it only does primary color correction. Most people use Redcine to do an initial pass, and then take the files they export into another finishing program such as Apple Color.
Making a film print takes an extra level of calibration, most would use an experienced colorist at a facility that does alot of film transfers.
The purpose of Crimson is to move sequences through Redline or Redcine, making it possible to debayer after an initial cut.
Warm regards,

"Add extra frame for FCP" option. Could you explain this function? Why we need it?
It has to do with the way final cut reads the in and out points off the roundtrip XML, it wants an extra frame of padding on the source file, without it, it will drop a frame that you want off the end. I'm going to try to revisit this problem around build 0.9.6 and see if we can't simplify this, but for now, in most workflows it's useful to have that extra frame handle and not a problem since the next system is performing the actual conform, that's why the checkbox is set by default. For a very few workflows it's useful to leave it out by unchecking the option.
You can control exactly how many frames you have on each clip by setting the start and end frame handle options which can also be negative numbers such as Endframes = -1.

Hi Ian,
I'm wrapping offline editorial on a feature shot on RED. I inherited the project from another editor, who had done an assembly using 1K proxies. As we approach finishing and delivery, what do you recommend as an optimal workflow for going from my offline FCP sequence with its 1K proxies to a full res 1080p24 sequence and EDL ready for a DaVinci session? I'd ask the coloring facility themselves, but none has been hired yet.
This is my first time cutting RED footage, so I apologize if this question is beneath your pay grade : )

Heh, I have no idea what my pay grade is...
I'd suggest exporting DPX files using the Frame, Color and Redline Tabs in Crimson. Each DPX file has a frame of timecode in the header that can be conformed from another EDL you generate directly from Final Cut.
I'd talk to the post house about exactly what structure they need the DPX files to be in. I can probably help you with that.

Yes I've had that idea for a while. I don't know of a way to do it right at this moment.
Seems like the Red room is still problematic. I myself have been converting everything to DPX in Crimson/Redline and opening it in color via an EDL straight from FCP. That is how I finished a project that went out to festivals last month. Worked wonderfully, though only 10bit I know.

Sorry to hijack a Crimson thread to talk about another app, but you can basically achieve this with Clipfinder and Colorfixer from Hans Daun.
It uses proxies, not L&T, so you don't need extra drive space. My manual workflow is described here (http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=26474), and Hans Daun's automated version of my hack here (http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=26774).

Once you render out your DPX files there is no need to return to Final Cut with your DPX files. Take an EDL directly from FCP to Color and use it to conform the DPX files in Color.

The issue is getting the right timecode through Shake, GlueTools, etc. It's something we are working on tackling in our new software. But the original Crimson wasn't built for that really. In general when working with DPX files I'm finding EDL workflows are extremely helpful as long as you can preserve the timecode in the DPX headers.

I recently getting troubles working this Crimson.
I have OSX 10.5.7 Leo, Final Cut 6.0.5 and Crimson 9.45 Rip Tide, QuickTime 7.6 (472), Red Alert 3.6.0
My work flow is to get R3D files converted to DPX to grade them in Lustre.
Every time a try to render with Crimson I got a folder full of DPX files, but ALL of them are the very first frame of R3D file.
Same thin is rendering to MOv, complete length movie and each frame is the same - the very first.
I tried different color settings, size settings, outputting to different HDD, every time I get the same issue.
I DON'T have to problems rendering with REDALERT, and ClipFinder, but bought Crimson gives me a headache
Is this kinda bug for 10.5.7?
Please, help

Hey Ibloom, I just downloaded your 0.9.4 update and it won't open, is there something I'm missing??

Is Crimson still being supported? Seems the last I heard is the Snow Leopard issue was being worked on, and that was back in September. I'm also getting 'critical errors' when trying to roundtrip now, eventhough everything is set correctly.

I'm upgrading the new build "Belgrade" tonight. Just wanted to wait until some users had time to actually test it.

Please be clear in understanding I work on Crimson perhaps 12 hours a day. The best way to get your problems solved is to email me.

Hey Ian,
I am one of your early customers and supporters. If you are able to share anything on what you are specificly working on please do. Just curious.

is there a way to use Crimson with RedCine-X?

Ian,
I posted this on the thread "Newer Redcine-X is posted" but received no response from the Red Team. Maybe you're the best person to ask this of.
It appears that importing intermediate alias files is not compatible with Redcine-X... which means that using Crimson Workflow to facilitate transcoding cutdown selects is disabled. This is a setback for our workflow. Is there forthcoming support for this?

Hey Ian,
Is 0.9.45R Rip Tide still current, I have got a TVC coming up shooting on the red, and I am not using any snow leopard machines (there seems to be an issue with it and my video cards, so I will not update anytime soon)

I 2nd this question. The lack of XML support is really bothering me. I love redcine, but I'm forced to use redcine-x because of upgrading to the MX sensor. I'm really hoping someone comes up with a solution for this.

bump... Ian is this possible, to load intermediate clips in Redcine-X?
Will there be a patch to support this?

Well,
What I call a "cowboy-intermediate" is really a symbolic link on your filesystem. Many programs see symbolic links transparently, as though they are the original file, but the last time I checked Redcine-X is not one. So the answer is no... but on the upside, if there is eventually XML support in Redcine-X and it simply loads clips in the order specified by the XML, and allows multiple references to the same clip then... the whole reason for inventing the cowboys in the first place is eliminated. I will support that either by modifying the original Crimson or via my new software, depending on which is more practical when the time comes.
Until then your guess is as good as mine.

Dave,
I can't really answer your question directly but my guess is that once Redcine-X progresses further you won't need a third party like Crimson to do a complete workflow... this was an assumption I made almost two years ago when I started this new project.

At Red Day, there was a development build of Redcine-X that supported an EDL import, and they say it's forthcoming. No time given as to when.
Seems like something was changed from Redcine to Redcine-X to not permit referring files like the "cowboy intermediates" and that this would be an easy enough thing to change back?

There are plenty of good reasons not to see symbolic links transparently when traversing a file structure... In a program that automatically searches a drive for R3D files as Redcine-X does it seems like the right choice, in fact Crimson doesn't see symbolic links transparently either ;). With something so low level as filesystem access it's a good idea not to mess around.
I think you just need to give them some time. Redcine-X doesn't appear to be a rewrite of Redcine, but a brand new program written from scratch. Or not from scratch as the case may be. That's quite a feat for such a small period of time.

It is still funny that you are the only one that got it right right from the beginning almost 1.5 years ago.
Keep on rocking.
