I was just trying around Matrox MXO with Redcine displaying on the second desktop (which means MXO's desktop) that is connected HDSDI monitor and it seems work really well. I'm using Mac Pro 8 core (3Ghz) with ATI Radion X1900 graphic card. Since MXO takes video from graphic card's DVI port, I was thinking it will perform pretty well and it did.
Users with MXO should try downloading Redcine and red clips and see.
Just be sure you have spare boot volume with none QT7.4.1. I crahsed my system when I had QT7.4.1 and Leopard 10.5.2 update. I tested above with 10.4.11 and QT7.4.1 and it worked fine for a long time for now.

I can certainly say that I saw this system in action today and it worked great. I was quite amazed to see 4k played back on REDcine in real time without any lag at all!
Highly suggested to all.
edit: not entirely true. I got overly zealous but it was definitely an excellent system that we will be using in the future.

Any other successful Mac Pro configs? Buying the Octicore today and looking for the best video card for RED.

Let me revise my statement. There was a little bit of lag in playback now that i've compared the two, but still definitely an excellent system. A great way for several outputs to maintain quality playback.

Mac is Mac Pro 8 Core 3Ghz, the graphic card is x1900 running at x8 lane PCIe speed since I have Multibridge Eclipse connected. I can probably ignore Multibridge for running Redcine, then switch the PCIe lane speed back to x16 and probably playback smoother.
MXO gets accelerated playback using the graphic card acceleration, so I thought it works well for something like REDcine.
I also have a RAID6 drive with special Enhanced Tech 8bay case and Areca SATAII RAID card connected.

When you say 4K played back real time, do you mean full rez? Or do you mean medium and 1/2 quality or some other setup? A bunch of folks are going to go out and buy this if they think it solves all the problems.
So at what level will it play in REDCine and what qualities work and don't, if you would be so kind as to check it out.
Does MXO let you accurately set up your monitor for grading? It seems like that option was going to be available.
Thanks!

Sanjin,
I don't own one but I work with Viceral and I don't ride BMX, my wife prohibits me saying BMX for kids so I settle for downhill mountainbike :).

Now I understand more about REDCINE to answer this question.
MXO will ouput REDCINE screen as 1080 or SD, with GPU acceleration.
It works just like how you see it on your computer display but through video monitor. So in order to playback smoothly, you have to lower the resolution just like you do with computer display only config., but give you choice to see the clip through video monitoring environment, so I would say if your project is for video then the grading with MXO and video monitor is fine as long as you choose the REDCINE setting to REC709 I guess.

I just demo'd one of these and I never got RED proxies playing out of Final Cut to work right.
I think it's a good box if you've got a laptop or want to add color bars and calibration into your dvi card to dvi monitor path. If you've already got an HD-SDI monitor and you're not on a laptop then I think a Kona or BM is probably better since you're not using up one of your DVI outs to use those cards.

Log and transfered prores clips from R3Ds work fine in FCP and its timeline.
MXO can be used with Mac Book Pro or iMac because it uses DVI.
Also getting video out from REDCINE with no lagging is very unique feature of MXO.

Yeah - good point. If you want to dump a R3D straight to another device via HD-SDI that's a solution. But being able to play the proxy files is a pretty huge part of living with RED so they should get that solved.
