Hi All,

Just wondering if titanium would be a feasible material to make the support rods out of....

Price aside...seems like it could be a good solution??

But again, if it's good then why hasn't anyone done anything with it?

Would most likely cost an arm and leg. Dont know that there is a market for it...cost vs. weight is not enough to justify it.

Im gonna make some.
I just love the idea way to much.

If its somewhat affordable.

I would try the Ultra rodz from ET before you go to all that trouble and cost. They are pretty light.

I've hear the Ultra light rods don't support enough weight. Is that true?

Just got a 24 inch set of ultra rods from ET and believe me they are strong!

i looked into getting some Ti rods made. the best quote I got for custom rods was $85/Kg for Ti grade 2, plus $125 shipping from china.

the lead time was about 6 weeks though.

Expensive metal, very difficult to machine and melts around 3000 ° F. Production cost wouldn't be justified.

You can get titanium tripods and bikes, so I'm sure you could get rods. But they would be expensive.

ET's nickel-coated aluminum rods are very nice & lightweight, but they are not appropriate for supporting very heavy zoom lenses. Shove them under your camera to mount the battery & raid on the back and a prime, mattebox & follow focus on the front no problem. But stick an Angenieux 25-250 HR or God Forbid a 24-290 monster and you really need to have steel rods.

Not such a good solution, ti is not very stiff compared to steel, it makes a great spring, can flex without deformation, but the modulus of elasticity makes it a poor choice. It would have to weigh as much as a steel rod to have the same stiffness characteristics.

It does make pretty white sparks.

Every one of those lenses I have ever rented has come with the appropriate rods. It's pretty safe to assume that a good rental house is going to give you what you need to make the lens work.

Yes, I was going to say, AFAIK from the mountainbike/road bike business, titanium is not a terribly stiff material. It's very good for certain things, but it's not for everything.
