Hey guys, I have a question about monitoring out of FCP onto a JVC 17" LCD production monitor. I had thought about getting a DeckLink HD card to monitor out of FCP on, but then I decided to buy a JVC 17" LCD production monitor to go along with the JVC SD monitor.

I'd like to get a second video card, put it in my MacPro and then hook the JVC monitor up to it. I know that JVC has DVI on it, so I'm not worried about that working, but I am concerned that I will not be able to get accurate color on it. Should I be able to just set the gamma to 2.2 for that monitor, throw up some HD color bars, and then adjust the monitor. Will that work?

No really. It will get close, but likely there will be some aspects of the image that can never be fully calibrated.

The good news is that for only a little more than what a regular video card would cost, you can just get a Blackmagic Intensity card that will have a proper component output.

That's what I'm going to do. Turns out Apple Color Supports that card. And the JVC supports HDMI via the DVI input so you can use a HDMI to DVI cable. Seems to me the HDMI should be accurate. I'll have the component cables set up too so it'll be easy to go either way.

I actually have the BM Intensity Pro already and my issue with it is with HD to SD (HD timeline playing back composite onto a SD monitor) 23.98 won't play back. If you put HD clips in a 23.98 SD timeline, it will playback fine (kinda, the telecine is much poorer than the AJA IO LA I had before.) Since I already have the card, I guess I can try the composite connection first, see how that does. If it's no good, then try the HDMI->DVI converter. The Decklink HD card would be nice though--then I wouldn't have to drop the timeline down to SD to preview it on a SD monitor also.

BTW, what aspects of the image would I never get fully calibrated?
