View Full Version : Video: REDCINE -> FCP; Audio: Proxies -> Compressor -> FCP. Am I correct?

I seem to have gone through a lot of the forums here and have been unable to really get a straight answer out of this.

I just shot something with the RED in 4k. I'm not looking to output back to 4k (I'm thinking most likely down to 1080 or DVD), but I'm thinking that 2k is probably my best bet for editing.

Here's what my assumption has been for doing this:

Video
1. Color correct using REDCINE to use accurate raw files.
2. Export in REDCINE to ProRes HQ 2k for editing.
3. Import these files into FCP.

Audio
1. Drop proxy (does it matter which one?) into Compressor.
2. Extract audio from said proxy (any recommendations in audio codecs?)
3. Import these files into FCP and match with video.

I've heard of ways to downres to 2k using Compressor, but I feel that I would lose the great color correction power of REDCINE & RAW files.

If what I've listed is the way to go, is there any way to process video in REDCINE in the background, so I can do other things while I wait? Maybe a different piece of software (RED Alert?). I'm using a 4-core Mac Pro, but the F11 key doesn't work with my keyboard, so I'm kinda stuck in it (I'm not even sure if you can minimize while video is being outputted).

If it's not the way to go, any recommendations?

Thank you!

I found this and it's been a big help. Seems as though I had the right idea...

why grade every take when you can just grade the final product.

open up a prores hq 422 23.98 1920 x 1080 sequence in fcp.

search your drives for h.mov files. drop them all into fcp via file import.

set rt to unlimited

set quality to low or medium depending on your ram

start cutting.

once you are done, you can then go back to the r3d files and pull your takes and grade the final product.

good luck

Not a bad idea.

I left my computer run overnight to process the ProRes and it finished, but I had yet to start editing it. I might just use the proxies like you recommend.

However, why do you recommend opening a prores hq 422 23.98 1920 x 1080 sequence in FCP? If I'm editing the proxies, they wouldn't be prores (I'm assuming I'm just missing something here).

What I might do right now is use the prores files I have right now, edit it down, then grade the color in REDCINE and reexport the specific files out and replace them. Does that sound like a good idea?

prores is the default sequence preset with fcp for the proxies. they are made to work in prores without rendering. so by design they are able to be cut right out of the camera. i do it on set everyday.
