There are two main options

1. HD-SDI to a production monitor
Uncertain if you get all the sexy info from this tap

2. HDMI
Use a cheap computer LCD

Not all work, because the signal is slightly off standard (or at least used to be)

Thanks for the quick reply Gunleik :)
Will the hdmi out (using computer lcd) also show the camera's menus and settings?
You mean a Computer lcd with hdmi input? Are there any battery powered LCD's with hdmi?

The HDMI should be an exact replica of the EVF/LCD

Still waiting for my tracking# here...

If your monitor supports the HDMI 1280x848 mode, and you put the camera in DVI output (pre-build 15 talk here), then yes you'll get all the menus and stuff.

You will NOT get them if you use HD-SDI. Only the Red monitors and the HDMI output can display all the menus, assists, information and graphs and stuff.

There's a fairly big long thread somewhere in this forum section about alternative LCDs - can't remember the title, but the last post wasn't too long ago, so should be fairly easy to find...

Practical upshot was that the Carrion monitors (www.lsdsgn.com) are a great option - I'll be getting one in the very near future hopefully, I think I put the order in sometime last week. Will report back with first-hand info, but everyone seems to speak very, very highly of them. It will (definitely, has been tested) show menus over HDMI/DVI input.

I have to do a presentation this afternoon and I am borrowing a RED body. I was planning to use a DVI monitor to act as an enlarged LCD to be easer for the group to see. The online manual says to go to the Monitor menu and select HDMI under the Active heading. The camera has build 15 instead of 13 (which was the latest manual I could find at the RED site). There is a Preview menu instead of the Active menu. The only 2 options there are Menus (DVI) and Video (720). Neither of them send a signal to the monitor.

How do I get the Preview signal out of the HDMI output. Thanks for your help.

From the menus SYSTEM/MONITOR/PREVIEW - Menus (DVI) Most PC monitors should lock up to that -

Thanks, Stewart, for the super quick reply. So, it may be my monitor that is the problem? It is native 1920x1080. It should accommodate other resolutions, but I guess it doesn't like 1280x848 for some reason.

Stewart you are brilliant. I just picked up a new monitor and it works perfectly. That's what I get for trying to use a 2 year old monitor with the most technologically advanced camera on the market.
