I am currently in Mexico and am planning to move back to the US. My question is, if one wanted to set up a small equipment rental shop catering to indie productions, commercials, etc, where would be the better place? I have about the equivalent of a 1-ton equipment truck in gear (Lighting, Grip, Sound, Camera, etc). My concern with each city is that in LA the competition is fierce (complete weeks are rented at day and a half rates), and in NY getting around with equipment is a MAJOR pain.
Any thoughts which city might be better for a start up?

based on 1 ton i assume you are geared more towards lower end Indie/commercials ??? i don't know NY ... from what i know of LA/SF/Seattle/Portland any of those area's are not short on equipment/crews so it would take some time to work your way into any of those area's ... i would think that San Diego might be a good area or Austin ,TX too ...
with a choice bewteen NYC or LA i say go to the one you would prefer to live and make sure you give yourself some time to work your way into the local area ....
BUT then i would think that if you had a low # RED - work would find you very fast ...
