Anyone have recommendations for closed-back circumaural headphones that have very fairly flat frequency response and are comfortable to wear for long periods?

Lowkus, sorry that this post doesn't answer the "flat frequency response" part of your question... but most of the sound people I know work with MDR-7506'es in the field. They are comfortable, portable, they don't need a ton of signal to go loud, and the uneven frequency response actually helps - they're a bit bright so you notice if you're screwing up more easily. It's a bit like peaking in the viewfinder. IMHO, you only really need flat frequency response later on...

They cost around $100. Hope that helps.

Yeah what Bruce said. Also their impedence is 63 ohms which makes them useable with just about any source. I use them for everything from my metal detector to my Mackie mixer. Also they fold up nicely and fit in your coat pocket.

I tried a pair of those once and didn't like them... the ear cups are too shallow.

That's good to know. For later usage in an apartment scenario (don't wanna wake the neighbors), what is a good headphone for editing?

I would think MDR's would be just fine. Now sound mixing is something else altogeather. Most mikers don't recommend headphones for audio mixing.

If you're looking to save a bit of money, the MDR-V6 headphones are almost identical to the MDR-7506 headphones (I think the only difference is that the latter have a gold-plated plug), and can be found $30-40 cheaper.

Gotcha... you are right, better find what is most comfortable for you.
Of course, you could always try the 7506'es with softies...

Regarding editing on phones late at night, (not mixing, I understand) maybe try some Grados? I think they let a little sound escape due to the open design, but they might have a combination of comfort and good sound quality that makes you a happy editor...

Personally I just use my 7506'es or my nearfield Genelecs - they sit close to me and are pretty detailed even at low volume. No complaints from my apartment neighbors so far.

For indoor use. You can't go wrong with any of those.

I'm doing some work at the moment for a company that supplies audio accessories for the military around the world, they have tonnes of cool gadgets so I'll ask them if there is any military grade stuff that could be used for this.

The best things I've been playing with are those transparent curled plastic wires that fit in one ear and then the microphone beneath the cuff to speak into... Very Goverment agency :) ... Of course useless for this!

I chatted to a sound friend today and he agrees with you, Omen.

Have a good weekend everyone.

I have the HD280's and love them.

I use my HD280's for absolutely everything ever since I sold my home theater setup. I use the same pair for computer, iPod, and for watching TV (I turn the volume all the way up and use them as speakers).
