Well, I stated in another thread that wrapping a commandline tool into an automator action was easy....
So I just tried and....I present the first result of wrapping REDLINE: Make Quicktime Wrappers.
Looks like this in Automator:
http://www.redrental.dk/linked/automator/MQW.png
Download here:
MakeQuickTimeWrappers.action.zip (http://www.redrental.dk/linked/automator/MakeQuickTimeWrappers.action.zip)
- It needs .R3D file locations as input, not folders.
- You need to have REDLINE installed. It comes with REDALERT.
- Double click the un-zipped action to install.
- It's located in the "Movies" group in the Automator library
- You can also search for: red, r3d, wrapper, quicktime to locate it.
- There is no input file filter (yet) so only select r3d files or it will fail.
- It passes the original file list to the following action, not the wrappers.

Thanks so much Anders - I'd love ALL of the RedLine actions in Automator - keep pluggin away!!
"Render to QuickTime" and "Render to DPX" is almost done...
BTW: Is it just me or is Redline not using the RSX settings?
I use "Redline -i inputfile --format 10" to make the wrappers.
Also tried the --useMeta tag...

-take the generated proxies....and run them through compressor to get a folder with 1k/2k Pro Res files...?

Anders thanks a lot for this tool... its great....
will it be possible please to make one automator action with the --useEC tag? so that we can have the edge TC in the wrappers??? this would be really great....

can someone explain to me what this automated process is mainly used for? to accomplish what in the process of shooting/posting RED? sorry for the basic question...thanks...

The actions can be sed as a swiss knife for building a workflow.
This first wrapper action can batch process all your R3D files and build wrappers if they are missing.
My next action can export stand alone Quicktime files from R3D files. This enables you to batch convert all your files to another format without entering Redcine.
It's all about flexibility. Redcine doesnt read the project framerate at the moment, and is very unstabile on my Mac Pro. Having a flexible option that always work is the prime thing.

Anders -
Again, Thank you so much for this little nugget of awesomeness!
I am PM'ing you about a donation for your hard work. This really is great!
anders
thanks for what you are doing
it would be great making quicktime wrappers using .rsx file.
in that way you can start editing with a look for your quicktime proxy.
is that possible?

Thanks Shawn.
If you feel like supporting me you can add some funds to paypal@andersholck.com by clicking the donation button at my fcprescue site (http://www.fcprescue.com)
But as I always say: just send me some good karma and happy thoughts :-)
I cant get redline to apply the .RSX look, if anyone has this working in redline please post the commandline option for doing so and ill add it to the action ASAP.

what is fcp rescue doing anders?

what is fcp rescue doing anders?
It makes a backup of all the preferencefiles sed by FCP.
Then you can restore at will. Or trash to clean the preferences and get the "virgin" settings back.
It's still a problem, even in version 6, that fcp sometimes corrupts the preference files making the software unstable.

It lets you backup, trash and restore your FCP preferences - easily. Link: www.fcprescue.com (http://www.fcprescue.com)

thats very nice from you Anders.... thank you a lot...
one more question: In Redalert you can copy the redalert settings for redline in the render window to the clipboard. Will it be possible to add a small box where we can put in additional redline commands? So we could put in onelight settings... ?
thx

anders, with which application are you creating this automator plugins?
Deanan

Automator plugins are made in xcode.

The upshot is that you can use applecript to program the actions, and cocoa bindings to take care of linking the interface to your variables. Makes it very fast to get it working.

How do you get this to work? I have never used Automator. I see this action in the Automator search (left pane), but it won't let me drag this into the workflow.
Maybe I am just old school, but this seems too complicated to me.
Here is a little script, really just a command line, that will search directories below where you are and create proxy files using Redline. You could easily modify this to render out Quicktime files or DPX or anything Redline can do.
for FILE in */* ; do redline -i `echo $FILE` -w 10 --omitNA ; echo "for $FILE" ; done
In Terminal goto the .RDM folder and run this.
Thanks

Hello guy,
Anyone has an automator action or something quicker than going into redcine for creating quicktime file. I think about something like a program using redline may be without entering in the code.
Thank you,
Hi
I am trying to get this action to work but when I click on downloaded file, DVD studio pro opens and nothing else happens, is there something else I need to do.
Thanks

search for automator and run the app. The do something like in the attached image. (btw, there's an dumb automator problem that limits the length of time it can run a script and causes problems with long renders. I have a work around coming out shortly).

Dispatching to Qmaster or a terminal window would also get around script runtime issue...
Trevor Meier

A nice feature would be adding Automator variable support to these actions - so you could for e.g. set your RSX look path or Redline render options in a variable that is passed to the RedRender action.

The runtime issue is fixed and will be in the next release.

It's part of the latest redalert release. It gets installed automatically as an automator action.

Run automator and you'll see them under movies in the library. If you want the actions themselves:
/machd/library/automator.

hello Anders and Deanan,
is it possible to explain step by step approach for us "dummies" which are not familiar with automator. please if possible - in a few easy steps :)) i promise will start to learn automator this afternoon, but in the mean time...
i mean, i understand the process - what this application is for, but when opening automator - cannot do much. even interface looks bit different (no these two icons on the left upper side of the automator window). maybe i am using older version of automator?
i know that i need to learn little bit to do something, but simple step by step process/explanation will be highly appreciated.
thank you,
filip kovcin

You may not see the two columns of icons on the left if the library is hidden.
Automator lets you build a little custom workflow based on the building blocks. If you look at the screenshot i posted earlier, it takes file or folder, then goes through all the sub folders, then filters for the first file in an r3d sequence and then puts it into redrender. You could do the same with REDcsv to make a database you could open in excel or use REDwrapper or REDale to remake the QT wrappers in bulk.

I've tried to use the Automator actions (redrender) with little success. At first I could only get it to execute the action if I had the r3d on my desktop and set the output to the desktop. I then discovered to get it to render to an xsan volume you have to set output to a folder that's name has no spaces or odd characters (not even underscores). I finally got it to render DPX files, however it stops at frame 177 out of 1,600. Automator shows it rendering but looking at the destination folder no DXP files are written after 177. I tried the same batch of r3d files to uncompressed QT and same thing, automator keeps rendering but when I check the QT in the destination folder it stops gaining size after a few GB. Which tells me redline is failing at some part of the process. Any ideas?

See post #33 above. Automator has a bug where it times out. A workaround is in place but not released yet in REDrender.
Automator uses redline to render which doesn't seem to be passing the filename to REDline properly for strange pathnames. We're looking for a workaround for that now.

Query XML in Automator - FREE
Cocoatron is a collection of Automator Actions that allows you to visually create XML Processing Pipelines.
Implemented using libxml2, libxslt, libexslt, and NSXML, Cocoatron suppors XSLT 1.0, XQuery, XInclude, and validation against DTD, W3C XML Schema, RELAX NG.
Cocoatron consists of six Automator Actions (pipeline stages):
- Load XML Documents
- Process XIncludes of XML Documents
- Validate XML Documents (DTD, XSD, RNG)
- Transform XML Documents (XSLT)
- Query XML Documents (XQuery)
- Serialize XML Documents
And one custom Automator data type which is used to pass XML documents between Cocoatron Actions: XMLInfoset

Trying to get this Automator Action to work, but it doesn't for me. It didn't even install as described when I double clicked it. But, things have progressed in 2 years, so maybe that old script is no longer valid for OS X 10.5.8.
So, I tried building my own Automator Workflow and can't get it to work either. Any suggestions? I've attached a pic of my workflow.
Thanks.

Okay, starting to get things to work. Here's what I did to make it happen. I found an "Import Action" function in Automator. Pointed it to my desktop where the Action was, imported it. Put it under the "Find Finder Items" just as pictured in previous post, then it ran. Thanks Anders!

Quick question...
Are these Automator scripts still supported in the latest REDline build? Are they "safe" to use?
Also, does anyone still have the original automator scripts on hand?
Thanks in advance...
Chris!
