If you can afford a RED, why the hell would you shoot Super8?

Haha!

Congratulations to red - who would have thought that they would enter the telecine market :)

i have to say that i didnt think about that - but it perfectly makes sense :)
Now REDCINE finally does run directly on the camera!

I want those Adam monitors in the background for my recording studio.

I could think of a few reasons. Capture the authentic look/feel of 8mm, "hi-quality" DI options for use of your 8mm, etc...

Yes, 8mm is a very unique medium and as long as this film stock is available there will be someone shooting it. I will definitely digitize some stock I have laying around and post some results when 1781 arrives. :)

Well, I knew if I waited long enough.....

VHS was certainly not going to get it, Mini DV tempted me, but I knew that HD was right around the corner, so now there's no question where my 6,000 ft. of 8mm and Super 8mm home movies will end up! First guy with a telecine rig set up, be sure to PM me....I'm in!

what about telecining 35mm to red :)

I finally got to hear the Adams recently and was highly impressed.

I still rely on my Dynaudio BM15a's for midfield monitoring but at $1000/pr the A7's are my new favorite nearfields.

Well, the $450 I just spent to have all my old super 8 film transferred to uncompressed quicktimes was cheaper than this setup that they're using, but I got to say, their's looks like a heck of a lot more fun. Has anyone used that machine yet?

I really think this is an awesome thing, and if someone had a sharp rig it would be utilized by directors.

Seriously, If you get this working. PM me, lets put it to use.

S8 was my first format. I shot with it last summer for the first time in 20 years (my son and I surf fishing)

Something magic and surreal about the format.

You need an Oxberry 'Wet Gate' Printer for a start.

Super 8 has come back. They make more stocks than ever. I can't keep up with cameras to sell.

Doesn't make a lot of sense to me... to use RED with that sort of telecine scanner. IMO, a good DSLR would be a more elegant solution and could potentially produce better results. Then again, scanning directly to REDCODE has advantages too.

I guess speed would be the advantage - they mention running up to 30fps and being limited by the speed of the Red at that rate...

Someone should tell them that 3K is probably enough resolving power for S8, and then they could get up to 60fps, assuming the transport will run that fast!

A DSLR wouldn't last long with the amount of frames you'd need to capture, after a few reels of super8 the mechanism/motor would be fucked. DSLR's are not built for that kind of use.

Yes there are more Super 8mm stocks available than ever before, including most pro-motion picture stocks and 8mm use is on the up. Check out the main http://www.onsuper8.org site for news and more 8mm info including our film stock and lab lists. We cant wait to see a Red One capture of some footage!
