9 months out.

I hope not

If the wait is too long I will have to get an EX1

They've handled Scarlet differently than the Red One thus far and I don't see that changing as far as availability. I'll go out on a limb here and say they will have working prototypes at NAB, pre-orders at NAB and shipping units in 2 months time.
Of course I base this on absolutely nothing at all.

Prototype model rendered with some 3d cutting technology and full features detailed @ NAB 2008.
Planned proposal output for late 2008.
Actual output late 2009. (prototype release)
Mainstream sales by NAB 2010.

Just making a realistic guess based on logical thinking. Having followed the RED 1 progress since the first week Jim announced his plans on the DVX forum i think late 2005. Original release was for april 2006. I have come to realize that expectations of quick releases is not only unwarranted but also unwanted. The building of a camera is a process that goes back and forwards until a product of genuine quality is achieved. Jim is a perfectionist. I gather that his number 1 main concern and that of his main working team is to get RED 1 finalities in order before NAB where it can start affecting the mainstream market. NAB is obviously the most important time of the year for manufacturers. I think it was NAB 2007 where we first saw the Red 1 prototype. (my dates maybe wrong, its been a whirlwind experience) So i gather thats when we will see a prototype. Then with Red1 it went through major design changes And 5 or so months later first testing models became available then they were tested in the field and early this year the first actual releases started going out (time frames are rough)
So i just used logical deduction and factored in that this process will be quicker than red1 due to them having done it before. I also factored in the importance of NAB. This is a time where all attention has to be off the competition and everyone going to your booth. I really believe the competition will stop trying to influence RED buying decisions via political wrangling and actually start competing with products. How many rental houses and high end industry workers have trashed red because of current industry affiliations? The market is being rocked and that unsettles a lot of people because it introduces new market dynamics. People jobs are on the line (or at least that is what they think) So before digressing into further sidetrack, the relevance is, the competition if they want to regain some market share have to compete because its not industry professionals that buys good quality image, its the market place and therefore those with better tools and can offer better value are obviously going to be making strong inroads and this will force professionals to stop listening to sales agents and rhetoric and more towards the market place. So i think the real plans are made in conjunction with NAB.

I can't imagine SI is going to lay down on the mini. And i'm sure arri and co will also have releases as Jim and company take major leads. So he has a lot of people's ears and he has shown he can do it. So he has a year in reality, and I'm sure he is going to use every bit of that time wisely. It really depends on what the competition releases but i'm assuming that they are still suffering from shell shock. I don't really know as i spend my spare time on Red User and not SIuser (if such a thing exists)

One thing i have learnt is not too get to excited and not have expectations then you can actually enjoy the experience of seeing a product get born. One thing you can expect is that the result will be well well worth it. I hope Jim doesn't stray from the formula that has worked so well with red1 and if he doesn't then an educated guess looks like, until more information is known, IMPO to be like i have presented. But yes, it's only a guess.

Who thinks Scarlet will be available this year?Part of what allowed Red One to be released when it was probably was the fact that it was a work in progress. In effect, it was a beta release, allowing early adopters to use a buggy, feature-incomplete camera because many were already committed to using it on specific, scheduled projects. I thought that Jim Jannard said that Scarlet wouldn't be upgradable to the same degree as Red One, so Red has to be careful, methodical, and thorough in its design, manufacturing, and testing. It doesn't want to rush production of Scarlet. Because Red is a small company with a limited product line, a poorly designed or defective Scarlet could significantly occupy Red's resources and seriously hurt its reputation and therefore its bottom line. Maybe more so than even Red One, Scarlet will be a daring product.

Well said supernova. I was just pointing out that nobody really knows anything for sure until red says so. Even then, "all thing are subject to change" at any moment.

Part of me wants scarlet to ship immediately (because i need to but a camera soon, and it kills me to have to get an ex1 or something else if scarlet is soon the horizon) but on the other hand, I want scarlet - whatever it is - to be "right", and that will require time. Additionally, I think it would feel a little weird to have so much input into red one's development process from the forums, but to be simply handed scarlet without any user input first.

In reality, I have a feeling we'll be waiting a good six months, but not longer than a year.

What makes you think Jim Jannard hasn't conducted focus groups or, at the very least, monitored this forum?

I don't have any idea what scarlet will be or what it will do, but guessing from the quality clues of the red one itself and the red brand overall, that it will be a useful product for an aspiring filmmaker/videographer/mograppher/etc.

if it doesn't fit my needs - i.e HVX/EX1 type camera - then I obviously won't be interested.

However, with that in mind, I'd like to see "what" scarlet is before I make a purchase directed somewhere else.

I don't doubt for a minute Jim and his team have been watching the forums. And I'm excited to see what's going to happen at NAB.
