OK

The final answer is: We have not been deceived!

This assumes that you:

a) Have pre-ordered
b) Own some pro equipment like sticks/support HD-SDI monitor etc
c) Do some still photography

Body: 17.500,-

Allowance: 2.500,-
Battery/Charger: 1.000,-
RedDrive : 900,-
Nikon mount : 500,-

Question is:
What do I do with my last 100?

Lenses:
My still glass

Monitoring:
Panasonic BT 1700 LH
(Or hdmi out to a TV)

Editing:
FCP in DVCPRO HD out from Redcine

Must admit that I would never have expected to be able to use Red @ the base price, but I see that I can.

Dunno if I would have to gaf the Red to my sticks to make this work, but maybe the 100$ could give me a base-plate mount.

If you're really on the cheapo, you could go the CF route, use some of your current cards and save another 400$ to spend on luxury equipment like rods etc.

-;)

This is - however - not how I plan to equip her... I wouldn't even suggest this route.

But it COULD work. And could make you some cash for further investments as you go.

Gunleik.

I don't know what you'd shoot with only one drive? Will you wait while it downloads with the crew standing around? What if it dies?

You've spent for RED batteries. What if you bought only the piece that mounts the battery? adapt to anton bauer with a plate,

http://item.express.ebay.com/Anton-Bauer-QR-SDH-Camera-Camcorder-Battery-Mount_W0QQitemZ290084506300QQihZ019QQtrZexpQQcmdZE xpressItem

buy used rebuilt AB nicad batts on Ebay for about $150.00 buy a used AB charger $200. then you have enough money for a second drive... Here is an example...

Well, as stated, this is not really what I'm going for, but just to ease out those who feel bummed.

To your question:
3 hours of 4k footy a day is enough for most of my needs. If not: shoot 1080 -;)

It's bad to only have one battery, but if I plug in when on sticks and use the battery when on jib/crane I'd be fine for a day worth of shooting.

I guess the last 500 would go towards some remote controll when on jib/crane btw.

Don't you want an EVF or LCD Gunleik? I believe the Panasonic monitor is the only monitoring you listed (although I see you mentioned HD-SDI monitoring also)

Gunleik Groven

I can monitor to the Panny through HD SDI. 17" of glorious native 720p

I also own (actually plugged in, tried and binned a year ago) a HD Link, that I could plug into my dell 24" or apple 23" for "Real 1080p" monitoring. -;)

Those come without battery solutions, though - So only the Panny is an option for situations where I need (some) batterytime.

Disclaimer:
This is not a recomended setup, not even the one I plan to use, just an illustration of how a total barebones setup can get you up and shoot 4k. Actually for much less than what I've spent on my HVX package...

TJ.
Yep!

Or a flash solution.
And: I would of course NOT go for a non-backup solutioon myself, but it could get some people up and running.

Cheers!

Ah..now I see. I tested that Panasonic BT 1700 LH monitor last year when I was writing a magazine review of the HVX 200. Very nice monitor indeed...

In Norway it's more expensive than the Red viewfinder...

I drag it around all the time. Like it a lot.

RED one is also design, sorry, I would never put a Bauer on my RED one. Why would Jim and his crew spent days and nights to give us such a incredible camera in hand, when we mix it up with used and ougly stuff? If ever I will use third party equipment like a canon fix lens (I will prefer them instead of nikon), I'm shure, I will paint them – black with a red stripe on it ;-)

Does anyone know if the LCD can be bought without the 10ft extension cable (listed at $300)?

Gunleik Groven
03-17-2007, 12:41 PM
Probably can. If you look at the batterypack price f.ex. it's just the result of summing the price of batteries and charger, and Jim has said that there will be a full á la carte menu in a while.

Cool. If á la carte is possible, that would make a usable LCD monitor only $1400. An even better deal.

OK - updated lowest price.

My original estimate left me with a Reddrive and 100$

Swop HD for CF card:
- 400 $

Swop Red batteris for secondhand AntonBauer solution:
- 500 $

For my 17500 I have a working Red kit and 1000$ for luxury gadgets!

For those with a working AB V-mount kit:
Take away 500$ (OK - I know Jim wouldn't give me the cash to do that, but still... -;))

1500$ for extras and luxury gadgets -;)

The LCD is sort of counterthread... But, I could put it in without that 300$ cable...

Any better?

Cheers!

Ouch, those heavy Nicd batteries will not cut it.
They are only 65 wh and heavy as €%&/, not to mention the memory effect, and with 5 batteries that is only a total of 325WH.

If you are on a budget why not buy 2x160WH GMP Li-ions and a dual charger at a total price of $693, that gives you 320 WH of power.

when shooting film i have never ended at the end of the day with 3hrs of material .... maybe on a doc i've hit 4 hrs but never in one place so data could be transferred off when driving from one location to the next or during?

we all have to work within our budgets... 22k gets different package then 30k or 50k .... at some point we should be able to rent from rental houses and/or use the RED map to network with other RED owners to rent accessories ?....

also many will add on to their packages over time ...

This is exactly my point of this thread.

Of course many (most) including myself will be buying more than the absolute hardcore package, but to quite a few Red is a dream come true - and mostly that at the moment.

These are the people that are ridiculed at some other lists, but I think some of these might do incredible stuff - given the chance (not all of course...)

The intention is to show these "fanboys" that:
Yes. If you ordered in advance - 17.500 will get you up and shootin'!

If you didn't, and you have some stash - 19.000 (and counting) will.

Still less than 50% of what I spent on my HVX package...

Heh...anyone here ever shot 16 or 17 1000' mags of 35mm in a day? Me neither. ;-)

When I got the 40 gig Firestore for my HD100 there were people on one of the forums talking about how they'd just have to wait for the 80 gig to be released. The day I got mine I booted it up at 720p24 and it gave me a time remaining indicator of 268 minutes. As if I'd ever shoot 268 minutes of footage in a day. Of course, the capacity of the unit wasn't even the issue. The issue was that its battery lasted less than an hour. ;-)

I think a production shooting 16/17 mags of 35 is a different scale of shooting then you are talking about. There are lots and lots of people involved making those rolls look good. Hell, I've been on shoots where there were two 65mm cameras shooting at 60 f.p.s. in 3-D. It's not the footage, it's what the crew can do with it.

I guess sports crews that still shoot film could burn through that much in a day.

I personally haven't seen anyone shoot more than a dozen mags in a day, though. They say Robert Rodriguez shoots something like 70 setups a day and credits working with digital for a lot of the increased productivity. I've never even been an observer around people who work that fast. To me a 30 setup day is a long damn day.

Been meaning to do this since the new pricing has been announced. Here's my personal "bare bones" RED package.

RED ONE body ............................. $17,500
RED EVF ........................................ 2,950
RED DRIVE 320GB HDD ........................ 900
Nikon F-mount adapter for RED ONE ...... 500
RED ONE RAIL-BASIC ....................... 1,250

Sub-total ................................... $23,100
Less "reservation credit"...................(2,500)
Total ......................................... $20,600

I have a pile of fast Nikkors already. I have four new Anton Bauer 14.4V 65Wh bricks and an Anton Bauer Interactive 2000 4-position charger. Also already own the V-lock two-position Sony charger and two small V-lock Sony bricks. Really didn't want to pop for the rail right away, but it looks like it's necessary to be able to mount the HDD, battery, and EVF.

Holy crap, I almost forgot Jim's generous "reservation credit!" Woo hoo! All that stuff for $20K and change!

[Forgot the the extra $1,750 in tax. Damn California state sales tax!!!] Maybe Jim could sell this to my Iowa "shell" company instead.

"[Forgot the the extra $1,750 in tax"

if you live in CA ..fill out form 6378 ( ca equilization tax board) and hand it to RED at purchase and you can drop the 5% of CA sales tax - you pay local/district taxes ( usually that above 5% ( 1.5 -2.7% depending on where you live) ... PROVIDED you are using the camera/equipment 50% of the time in a production or post business ...

my taxman mentioned that there could be a exception on MEDIA =
if you use hard drives/flash to record and then transfer to another media and hand that to client you don't pay the tax ( on cost of hard drive/flash that was used in/on camera etc) under 6378 ... however if you record to hard drive and then hand it over to client then it doesn't quailify under 6378 and somebody has to pay the TAX ( on cost of media) .... check with your taxman..
