I would not say its just 256 colors, but it has visible banding artefacts and seems to clip below 8 bit this way. There seems to be no dithering applied to reduce the banding artefacts.

Yes to the banding :(
BUT... I think the LCD is a really nice compromise between brightness outside, light weight, interface with the camera's menus, and inclusion of histogram, false color, and focus zoom features.
But don't expect it to render the same "engineer's quality" picture as an Astro or Sony or Panasonic. It can't, at that price point.
All of the tools have their place. If I'm on a tripod or dolly, I mostly will look at the Panasonic 8.4", and keep the Red LCD on for the AC or for quick menu reference or false color. Whenever my EVF shows up, I'll add it to the mix. And don't dismiss the importance of a 24" monitor for focus. I have the Sony LMD-2450WHD, and while it's not nearly as good as a CRT, it's a pretty amazing picture and a really useful tool. Plus it's great for the client to watch.
So, in my opinion, who cares if he Red LCD has some color banding? It fulfills a few key roles, and there are other tools that when time, budget, and space permit, can be added to the mix.
Sorry... rambled a bit...
Cheers,
Harry
