how about these things: http://www.curtpalme.com/boxHD.shtm
or: http://www.ambery.com/dvtocovidvto.html to connect the hdmi preview out to a cheap lcd monitor with component input.. (just for videotap)

Why not just get the Dell 1708? It works, and it's less expensive than that converter box.

I have a box works great..$30 on ebay HDMI to VGA...you can get pigtails to get the R G B from the VGA.. should work just fine.

no point though if you can afford $200 for a computer LCD screen....

This is what I was kind of looking for. I am directing a short coming up with my HVX/LEX, and there are two shoots I want to do with my friends RED because of the ramping and overcranking. I thought instead of dealing with the RED clips in post, I'd just playback on his RED and use something like this to capture direct to my HVX in DVCPRO100, since the rest of the film will be shot in that format anyway. I'm looking forward to using the REDs full potential someday, but do to the limited budget, not on this project.

Using the Video output of the RED for your final movie is like you use the images captured on a Video Assist from a 35mm camera, itīs a "quickīnīdirty" preview and will most probably be lower quality than a HVX200 recorded material.
The Red camera has to be treated like a film camera, you need to "develop" your files, but you donīt need to take the files to the filmlab, you put it on a IntelMac or PC instead...

The Hdmi to VGA box in ebay you mention for 30 bucks are VGA to HDMI.. the HDMI to VGA are around 100-150 dollars.. but still a good idea
