Red does not make microphones. Any standard XLR microphone will work with an XLR-to-mini-XLR adapter. You get to choose what microphone will work best for you.

Maybe I missed the reasoning somewhere - but mini-XLR seems like a weird choice. Now everyone either needs new cables or an adapter. And do you really want an adapter in your audio chain?

I've been wondering this myself. Is there a RED RAIL component that's specifically made to hold an on-board "camera mic?" You know, that omnipresent short-shotgun mic that we all have on our ENG cameras, just in case our primary audio for some reason "isn't there?"

Yes. Some way to attach a third party mic holder is a must. Also, the veritable shoe mount (for mounting anything really -- bat light or whatever) would be nice. Will we see an attachable shoe mount?

You can get a shoe mount to microphone adapter. Also that top bar on the Red mounting gear would hold a shockmount adapter. I'm sure it won't take much to get that all working right. The mini-XLR still seems weird. I'm kinda assuming the 4 knobs on the left of the camera are all audio levels.

Standard XLR would necessitate an increase in camera size. Since not everybody will be using in-camera sound, growing the body for a feature that many will feel is unnecessary [/unprofessional] wouldn't be a great idea.

Well, I don't know for sure why Team Red chose mini-xlr's..... my guess would be size. After all we are getting 4 of them and they take up space.
What I am sure about is, Team Red has a very good reason for every choice they make.
IMHO, after a grueling 14 months of Hard Work to get this camera out, at the very least they deserve our confidence, gratitude and trust.
Do you really care about buying a few cables to shoot 4K?
I don't.

And do you really want an adapter in your audio chain?I vote for new cables! Obviously, mini-XLRs were spec'd due to form factor constraints. Hmm . . . now that I think about it . . . where am I going to mount my wireless receiver plate? Oohhh, can't wait to get my RED ONE all decked out with a short-shotgun, a wireless receiver plate, and some cool cyborg-eye like, LED SunGun (although the KinoFlo Kamio has far better output than any LED solution--but damn, those LED lights look cool!).

Surely mini xlrs are just a cable change? Whats the big deal. (if they went with full size I'm sure the weight would change and then a storm of protests as usual)

OK, ok - no big deal, agreed. But if there aren't physical knobs to control the levels THAT would be a pretty big deal. If the trade was mini-XLR to make room for knobs then that's a really good trade. :-)
