Can one plug in a SATA RAID of any kind, format it from red (as 0, 10, 5, 50) and record?

I saw a comment that 3,5" disks were stupid.
Well, to me they're not.
@ 200$ pr terrabyte and faster than any of the Red stock options, I know a lot of uses for esata and sata raid boxes... -;)
Question boils down to:
Are all the recording options "smart" or "dumb" and is the camera controller "smart" or "dumb"
