hi people,

i got a silly question. for what is the usb-port in the red-one?

wouldn't it be possible (with a new firmware perhaps in future)
to output 3gp movie data trough ---usb--> connect it with a w-lan included mobile phone(server) ----w-lan---> and stream it to all in network connected w-lan conecctions (clients) (mobile phones or laptops/macbooks with wlan/airport in the distance range)

sketch:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
~..........................[mobile phone]
~....................[macbook]
~............[mobile phone]
[red-one]+[usb-cable]+[w-lan mobile phone] ~.........w-lan......[mobile phone]
~............[laptop]
~..................[mobile phone]

index: ~ = w-lan connection
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

so now some people may ask why da hell should red put out a 3gp data it is a 4k camera.

some reasons:
-wireless transmission is now possible, but only with a downconverter with analogue transmitter(two external electrical currents, a lot of cable party and more weight)
-you got the battery included in the mobile phone
-with the 3gp streaming, like i have described, there would be a lot more people to watch the image on set, not the whole crowd sitting only around one monitor.
- the continuity could have the possibility to record the 3gp stream(on a laptop). in some situations it wouldn't be neccesary to reinject older recorderd cf-cards to the camera.
- even those persons which normaly doesn't have so much acces to the big monitor. don't understand me wrong, but i could understand that perhaps, director,continuity,... are pissed off to have the whole company in its outdooroffice :)
- there are also even some situations where a cable connection is not possible, for example a small room without windows, and we see the door in the shoot

yes, i know 3gp is a bad quality. but in many situations you don't need a monitor to watch the quality, it is for look at the framing, where are the actors, the objects....
we all know that a dop, a gaffer or a dit never looked at a wireless signal to judge some picture quality.

------------
so just an idea about wireless streaming, what do you think about it ??? if it would be possible!! but i think it might, if red could send out 3gp.

we also could talk abut mp4, but don't know if mobile phones are fast enough today to stream it.

okey, greetz and i am ready for fighting conversation hahahahaha :usd:

Hi MANXLX!

I understand that analog SD transmitters aren't the cool thing for the 21'st century ;-)

but:

1. You have to know who can record material from primary cam - no one want to see leaking footage on YouTube ;-)

2. Today's mobile phones arn't ready for such a task - bad quality compression - low resolution - complicated to setup - limited bandwith - and the power is going down quickly if you use video functions... hmm - don't see the benefit from looking to a 320x240px screen...

What can we do??

1. We can use digital HD streaming to get wireless HD signals to all necessary departments...

but: it's not a good idea to put another encoding pc ontop of the RED ;-)

-> something like that could be helpful - with a more robust radio part for mobile opeartion and a wider range...

or - of cource - if you can afford it - a profeesional HD transmitter ;-)

All lower bitrate streaming is very long-GOP. 150 frames is not uncommon. That means a 300 frames delay minimum from input-to-output.
Thats 12 seconds in 25 fps....

And of course you'd need encryption for this to be usable at all.

Gefen is operating with 60MBit WLAN and JPEG2000 intrafarame only - so no long GOP ;-)

but for sure the WLAN transmission this will not be very roubust under filed conditions...
