View Full Version : Redcode RGB Back To Camera For Playback

One of the most surprisingly useful things about the HDV and HVX for me was the ability to pump a finished show back to tape or P2 for playback. Why? Often clients only want one flagship HD viewing of their program in a controlled environment, the rest of the time they're handing out SD DVD's, etc.
The camera itself made a logical "one-off" playback device for me to take into the field.
Step it up a notch with RED. It seems logical that you should be able to take a finished project, cut and polished in REDCODE RGB 1080/2K, copy it back to the camera's hard drive and provide a very rugged reliable dual-link HD-SDI playback of your finished show. Beat the Hell out of HD-DVD/Blue Ray options.
Run-time will NOT be a problem, an entire feature could spool off the camera's drive. This could be very useful for indy screenings, me-thinks...
Any reasons this couldn't be done? Hopefully you can copy to as well as copy from the drives...

Didn't think of this, but the cam is actually a very well priced 1080 4:4:4 vcr (through HD-SDI).
Maybe we'll see a followup of this @nab.
A red Playbck machine, basically playing back 4K 4:4:4 redcode footy from SATA boxes @ a price of - dare I guess - 4k -;)
With TC insert, overwrite, add options to the movies in the box.
Ideally it would come as entire units with a HD sledge for 3,5" SATA disks.
That'd be the final nali in the coffin for AJ-1200/PVW 500 like decks.

Wow what a great idea. How about the cheapest laptop with HD that plays back 1080p in Redcode? Compared to $1000 Blu-Ray players, I would have many commercial customers - Hospital waiting rooms - trade shows - etc.
Here's a new killer App for REDCODE on an HD with a PC and plasma.

Great ideas guys... and a logical outgrowth of the RED tech and REDCODE RGB potential. A PC spooling REDCODE is a great idea... it was only a few years ago I was setting up the same sort of thing with WM9 for clients to use as inexpensive POP displays and looping kiosks in HD.
At this point all I'm after is some confirmation that you can write back a REDCODE RGB clip (ie your cut show) to the camera's drive and that it would play... then if you own a camera, you basically own an outstanding playback deck as well.

WOOOHOOO!!!
Thank you Deanan!!
Geoff Boyle (CML) made the statement...that nobody mentions replay on RED 1....
Response from Dean DaSilva (RED) was that it's because maybe playback is......a fundamental function and not an option.
Cheers,
Dave

So does that mean that it is or isn't capable of doing that? Or it still isn't known for sure yet?

All I take that statement from Dean to mean is that you can play recorded clips back on camera for review... which is expected. I would have been very surprised if we couldn't do that!
What I'm talking about assumes at least three things;
-First, that you can physically write back to the RED DRIVE from your computer.
-Second that the REDCODE RGB is write as well as read from other applications like your NLE. Perhaps it's just read only from anything other than REDCINE...
-And third, that the camera can understand a REDCODE RGB file written from your NLE... that it have (or ignore if it isn't there) whatever meta-data about timecode, etc. necessary for playback...
None of these are confirmed in any way, from my current understanding...
