Just wondering how much 2k & 4k footage you can store on the RED RAM?
Is this device upgradable as larger memory becomes available?
Can you offload the data on the RED RAM to a RED DRIVE while in the field using the camera? Or do you need a Macbook Pro?
Thanks
Rory

It's roughly 1 gig for 1 minute of 4k RAW at 24fps...

4K REDCODE RAW = 27.5MB/s

so you should get around 35min of 4k on the RED RAM 64 (?)

(1024x64)/27.5 = 2383.1273 seconds.
39.718788 minutes

I think Rory is correct with the 35 mins.
A 64 GB drive will not offer 64 GB when formatted.
And the 27 MB/s does not include audio.

48k uncompressed is slightly more than 10megs per minute. I would guess 37min and that is leaving room for when the drive is formatted.

48000hzx24bit/8/1024x4=562KB/s
33MB per minute or 1.1GB for 35 mins.
Actually I didn't see that brook actually stated 27.5 MB/s which should include audio.
I guess you are right about the capacity though. The Red camera uses FAT32 formatting. My 100GB drive has a 92GB capacity when formatted.
A 64 GB drive would be about 58.88 GB with the same statistics or 36:30 assuming a 27.5 datarate. Pretty close to your 37 mins.

RED RAM formatting is going to work out differently than hard drives. It's FLASH based and memory sizing and addressing standards are in play. 1GB is defined as 2^30 Bytes as opposed to 1 billion Bytes as HDD manufacturers do it.
1GB = 2^30Bytes = 1,073,741,824 Bytes
As a comparison for 64GB:
FAT 32 formatted HDD: (1,000,000,000 * 64) / 1,073,741,824 = 59.6GB
FAT 32 formatted FLASH: 64GB. :)
Also figure approximately 8MB for FAT32 overhead. On some operating systems and various format procedures, HDDs often lose another 8 to 16 MB of space just within the allocation and partitioning of the drive.
But I've found over the years that if you want the real usable capacity of a drive after formatting and don't want to calculate out all those bits. Just take the advertised capacity -- like 500 GB. Multiply by the following and you'll get within about half a GB nearly all the time.
FAT32 - * 0.92
NTFS - * 0.91
NTFS4/6 - * 0.93
HPFS - * 0.932
Yes, my inner-geek is showing.
RED RAM @ 64GB capacity should store approximately 39.6 minutes of REDCODE RAW 4K @ 24fps with audio, assuming the 27.5MB/s covers the video plus audio data.

Cool! You are geekier than me :-)

AFAIK, 27.5MB/s is only 4K REDCODE RAW [nothing else].

how many of you are considering getting the Red Ram? It seems like a great tool, but the price is steep for me with the rest of the package....do you guys consider it a necessity, especially for stuff like handheld work?

just depends on how FAST is the RED Flash or how much faster it is then the 1.8 Sata 32gig unit ...
looking at it from $$
4500 for RED flash ...
1.8 Sata 500 module + 1500 32gig media X2 = 64gigs ( 3000) + module = 3500
so it's $1000 less then RED ram but if RED ram lets one shoot at X fps more then 1.8 sata then the faster FPS makes my wallet jump out of pocket.
but if they shoot the same frame rate then the convience of on board media + 1000 savings (64gigs) is a better value for my wallet..

I'm very interested in RED RAM. I'm also hoping that the price drops and/or the capacity goes up before I get my camera. :) But all things considered look at this:
Panasonic P2 8GB - $1125. $1125 / 8GB = $140.62 per GB. Ouch
RED RAM 64GB - $4500. $4500 / 64GB = $70.31 per GB. Interesting.
...Yes interesting, that RED has their RED RAM option priced at EXACTLY HALF of what Panasonic P2 media sells for on a per-GB basis.
