Forgive my terminal ignorance of all things softwarish...:greedy: :greedy:
Now that RED cine is available for download in a running verison why is there still a RED alert, and why is it continuing to be developed????
Will it run on smaller/cheaper computers?
Is it inherently more stabile?
Why????

RedAlert is awesome for a quick pass of just one R3D file.
Plus, if they've done their programming correctly, RedAlert should be using mostly shared code with RedCine

I thought Red Alert was a Nattress production while RedCine was done by Assimilate.

Also, RED Alert (and REDline) are all-CPU I believe, they don't require a specific GPU (or any at all).

Redalert and Redline are super handy because they can run on more machines (GPU independent) and Redline in particular can be convinced to work in a render-farm style operation. Both very handy apps.

RedAlert is more handy for a quick look than Redcine that "locks" you in one screen app. For example I can compare the looks at RedAlert and Shake, FCP, PS, AE, ...etc., from one screen simultaneously but from Redcine I have always to exit app...

RedAlert is the 3rd major version of my "little R&D app". (There's an awful lot of Deanan and Rob code in there too now) It has continued development because people like it, and we at RED continue to find it useful. As pointed out, it's CPU based and hence can run on practically any intel mac, regardless of it's GPU capability.

RedAlert is brilliant but when is it going to take 4K 16:9 files???? Pretty please let it be sooner than later!!!!!!!
Edit: I actually find it to be more useful in the workflow (converting) for us where we end up with professional graders.
Kind regards,

Yes, sooner rather than later....

RedAlert is still the only app that can generate new proxies. Will Redcine do the same eventually?

RedAlert is also a little more resilient than REDCine.
I had a batch of files that had some corruption in them (still figuring out why), redcine won't even open them, but I can get them to appear in redalert and navigate some ins and outs to render around the corrupt frames that cause the files to crash.
Without Redalert in the bag of tricks, this footage would basically be throwaway. Now it's missing a few frames here and there, but it's usable with some cutting.

RED Alert for windows would be nice..... ;-)

RA let's you do batches in the background through RedLine.
I think I read somewhere that you can send RC jobs to RedLine now, which is great (if I only can find out how...) RL is the fastest transcoder, and you can cluster it.

and it doesn't EVER crash.

not sure about redcine supporting redline- if anyone knows please enlighten me. RL is absolutely the fastest transcode out there, its all command line so if something :waaa:'s up you can just pick it up where it left off- lets see you do that with RedCine.
Clustering....now thats a funny issue. its not exactly done yet- works okay for DPX frames...but not at all for qt's YET.
Even still- a batch render out of log 320ASA or < to 1080p ProRes in RedLine gives you incredible latitude to work with in Color and limits your fixed pattern noise significantly

Can you post a set by step description of how you do a batch render in Terminal?
Thanks...

Graeme,
I'd love to see RED Alert do batch processing.
Is it in your future plans ?

...and I would love to have the ability to use ALL my codecs, and not just be limited to the few ones currently offered by RA...:ranting2:

Setting an in and out point should help with that (in REDCINE)

Which ones do you need to use? The list is restricted to the ones we've tested to work good.

There's lots of software plans for the future! Too early to talk specifics though... this year should be a good year!

Cineform Prospect 4K would be my first election. It is a winner no matter what it is compared to!:excl:

I want DNxHD out of REDline... But more importantly I want REDline for linux... But I'll wait.
