I want to buy the G-Speed E-Sata system from G-Technology, I can achieve a better than 350MB/S rate with two in a Raid 5 config. Is that fast enough for near realtime DPX grading in Color? Anyone?

Evin,

320MB/s sustained reads is what you need, regardless of software. : )

Evin, I built a 8 drive RAID 5 for $1800 in Sept, it's been solid on 3 big ongoing jobs since then.

I got almost 600MB/sec when it was empty, now get the below with it 75% full:

Gimme a call or PM, I assume you still have my number.

Nate-

What card/drives do you have in there? Which RAID setup do you have? 0? 01? 10?

Been thinking of getting a raid, but of course, waiting until NAB.

Thanks!

Oops. I see that it is a RAID 5

Gimme a call or PM, I assume you still have my number. Very interested in the specs of this raid. Very impressive results. Is it home grown or store bought?

I bought everything in this guy's review, all of it from NewEgg, except for the enclosure which came from DVWarehouse.com:

http://www.amug.org/amug-web/html/amug/reviews/articles/enhance/e8/

As stated above, I have it config'd in a raid 5.

Normally I'm not into home-grown solutions, but since it's really just buying the enclosure, the card, drives and cables, I decided to chance it. It's been fine for 5 months.

So that case and the rocketraid 2322 have been holding up fine? I am planning on getting those two (actually getting the eSATA case instead) and doing a RAID 5 system.

I guess I'll find out in a week or two when I order the gear.

Yup, fine, not a single issue, but I'm pretty sure the 2322 doesn't do eSATA. I know the connectors on it are nothing like esata.

Agree with Nate - the EnhanceBox / RocketRaid combo works well (I recommended one to a client half a year ago and it has worked very well - quiet too, which is nice).

G-Tech is great but obviously they put a major markup on the drives - 1TB module $529?!?! Bwahaha, you can buy 1TB drives bare for $200-$250 if you check dealnews.

But with G-Tech you get someone to hold your hand if something goes wrong.

Think about how technical you are, how demanding your clients projects are etc and decide from there.

I'd go the AMUG-recommended solution personally, but I'd also go with 1080p instead of 2k dpx files, so I think we have differing opinions about what is overkill.

Bear in mind there are 3 versions of the EnhanceBox & RocketRaid combo - one with 8 little cables, one with port multiplying (slower per drive but allows you to create a 20-drive raid when others are limited to 8 drives), and one with Infiniband cables (same specs as 8 little cable version, but more convenient because it's you only have to worry about 2 cables coming loose instead of 8).

Good luck!
