Hey there,
I just wanted to float the question regarding the outputs of the camera when used on a steadicam. I understand there is the DVI output for the LCD, but will the camera be able to output (in these early incarnations) an HD-SDI image?
I think the camera is really exciting for Steadicam use being so compact and symmetrical, but there are still a lot of extra bits that could get added on to handle transmission and monitoring of such a high spec'd camera on steadicam.
I have (sadly) a component HD monitor on my Ultra, so end up adding an HD-SDI to component convertor, or just downconverting to SD so that I can watch and transmit that.
Perhaps Red should make the "RED-Tx-One", the all purpose, never drops signal, compact and affordable HD transmitter with multiversity receiver!

There is a 720p preview HD-sdi that mirrors the HDMI port, and a master 1080i HD-sdi that shows the recorded image.

720p on the single-link HD-SDI. We also have dual-link HD-SDI out:

Dale downconverters like the AJA box we have work pretty well, can still use the ole Modulus. Nice to use an HD monitor but then what about transmission???

Anders,
I thought the camera monitor outputs were as follows:
CAMERA LIVE OUTPUTS
- EVF = 720p video with look around, frame markers and other graphics
- RED LCD = 600p video with look around, frame markers and other graphics
- HDMI = 720p video plus audio without graphics
- HD-SDI x single = 720p video plus audio without graphics
- HD-SDI x dual = 1080p clean signal
Meaning, the HDMI/ HD-SDI x single outputs didn't have look around, frame markers and other graphics?
Can anyone verify?

I don't know. But it sure would be nice to have a HD-sdi with overlays.
I just assumed that because of it's 720p res, which matches the EVF and LCD DVI resolution.
The dual HD-SDI is switchable between dual link RGB 4:4:4 or 2 x 4:2:2 outputs both at 1080 downscale of the recorded picture.
Why would you also want a 720p HD-SDI if it wasn't showing look around, and graphics?
Any RED employees what to educate us :-)
Yes there is:
There are four independent monitor outputs...
EVF - 720p video with look around, frame markers and other graphics.
LCD - 720p video with look around, fame markers and other graphics.
HDMI - 720p video plus audio without graphics.
HDSI - 720p video plus audio without graphics.
Note - The monitor HDSI is independent of the Dual Link HDSI, which supports a wide range of HD formats and frame rates.

I think it's time we bought ourselves an AJA downconverter. Sadly we never end up seeing native HD on our native HD monitor (it's pre-HD-SDI). But as TJ mentioned, transmission is the real issue. I think two small boxes onboard for DC and Tx will be okay. If we were to transmit HD it'd be one big box added I think, and plenty of cash spent!
I've used the Varicam and F900s/900Rs on our rig a fair bit, I think even adding bits n pieces the Red will still be a better camera to fly when it comes to mass and balance. I ran a BL3 a couple of days ago and they just kept adding accessories onto to it, take after take, and maxed out the springs in my arm/body/spirit. It's nice to put a camera together with a little more elegance. I can't wait to take all the accessories off the RedOne and fly that with a clip on mattebox and CookeS4.
I may have to look into upgrading to the HD-SDI version of our monitor, but thats half a RedOne in cost!

Is this (http://www.lcdracks.com/monitors/v-r841p-afhd.html) Marshall 8.4" lcd too big?

Yeah thats nice. It'd need to be kindasorta weather proof and consistent under full sunlight conditions (ours tended to overheat from time to time).

Dale, TJ, I made a valiant effort to suggest that RED would be a more stable Steadicam and handheld camera if it were lower and squatter (i.e. turned on its side), but that was not a win. I think we will be overall pleased with the way things turn out still, although my biggest reservation right now is the plethora of connectors on the right side of the body.
My feeling about video and downconversion is that we have a few more years of that sort of thing left--once the HD display technology catches up and HD transmission becomes more commonplace, we may be in luck. I for one look forward to the day that the DP is seeing a reliable HD image and we are running around cable-free.
Dale, sorry to hear you are still having to haul around BL's...been 10 years since I've had the "pleasure". Can't say as I miss 'em, mate. Although you do get to live in NZ, which may be a fair tradeoff!
