One of the things we do is Camera Crane work. The crane is longer than the 10" cable. Can I extend the cable? If I can extend the cable will it use a standard cable of some kind or will I need to ask RED to make a longer cable?
If I need to ask RED then....PLEASE Make a longer cable.....

Hi TJ!
Ouch.
I feel like I'm running around saying "me too" to your threads, but:
Me too! -;)

The EVF and LCD uses a custom connector. I think the physical connector is a Hirose.
// Speculation on
As the LCD connection is based on DVI, it should really depend on: the strenght of the DVI transmitter, the DVI implementation, the frequency of the signal and the cable quality.
You can get high quality passive DVI cables up to 10m.
By adding an active equalizer/repeater you can get up to 50m, and by using a fiber optic cable you can get 100m.
If this also relates to any other RED custom signal in the LCD connection is unknown. There might be some weaker control signals that wont extend that long.
// Speculation off
Another option would be to use the HDMI monitoring (separate from the LCD or EVF output) output and connect it to a Computer LCD, as you might want a bigger screen than 5.6" for crane work anyways. It should be easy to extend by the way I described above.
And of cause there is always the HD-SDI that should be good for at least 50m

I've seen you ask this question several times. Come on, man...
The answer is still the same... monitor from HDMI, HD-SDI or dual-link HD-SDI if you need a longer or cheaper cable. The monitor cable might have the capability to go longer [we haven't been told...], but just imagine what it'd cost.

a little bit of real world data: I recently had cause to run a 50 foot cable from my Blackmagic Multibridge Extreme's DVI output to my HDMI equipped HDTV (using a DVI to HDMI cable - HDMI is largely DVI plus audio and some other goodies in a smaller form factor plug). At first the 50 foot cable didn't work. Then I got a passive (non-powered) signal repeater - didn't work. Then I got an active (powered) signal repeater, then it did work. No telling what the power level/signal integrity of the Red One is compared to the BMD MB-X, but that does give one data point. The "normal" accepted max run for HDMI is about 50 feet from my limited research. Cable price? Local shops wanted over $200, found it for about $55 online after 10-15 minutes of hunting around - and it is a nice, pfhat, stout cable.

Mike,
actually I was wondering that (long HDMI cables) for something other than Red. If you could provide product info for the 50ft cable and the powered repeater, I'd appreciate that.

Hey Brook,
Are the cables male to female compatible? That is can they be joined togeather to make a longer one?

You might also want to check out Blue Jeans cables. Low price, high quality. I bought a 35ft HDMI for my HT Projector and it is VERY rugged. Passes full 1080/60p without a hitch.

With all due respect Brook, I don't fault TJ for asking this again because your main answer is NOT the answer to his question, it's an alternative. A good one I admit, but I am guessing that TJ wants access to his histograms, and such and we have already been told only the EVF and Monitor will have those things. So your alternative may not be what he and others (Like myself for instance) are looking for.
Your secondary answer "we have not been told", brings up a point we all need to accept. While the camera is "close" to done, it's not. We are getting info as it is available, but the bottom line is that everything is not ready, and so all the answers we need are not there yet. From what I can see, RED has gone back to it's work now and our next slew of answers will arrive in about 3 weeks. I think it's safe to say that on that famous Monday we will get more info than we have in the many months prior because by that time, they would have to be completeing things like manuals, packaging, and the like.
Like TJ, I have many questions, but I am starting to pull back on answering them since 99% of the answers will come in three weeks anyway.
While I am sure that 90% of the design and workflow issues are "done" I am guessing they are getting spanked by thousands of last minute details and all being done by a crew of 14... Ouch. Maybe it's time for a larger staff.
We're all going to have to be patient for a little longer I'm afraid.

Hi Brook
Probably we will find out at nab those of us who go. NAB will be as madhouse at the RED booth. My hope is that many of these questions will be saved by red team and answered on line during NAB week or shortly thereafter. The camera is not FINISHED, there will be additional accessories and capabilities beyond NAB. This is one that is very important to me because: Overlays such as "run" lens stop, etc. are important when shooting from the crane. Focus inhancement is also important. thus HD SDI although an alternative is not a very good one for the operator. Nice for video village though. I'm also interested to find out if the remote monitor allows remote start ala silicon imaging.

As far as extending HDMI, check out the options at gefen
http://www.gefen.com they have options to run up 150ft using cat5.
They've become on of the favorites of the high end home theater crowd.

Stuart said here (http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?p=10088#post10088) that the HD-SDI monitoring output will have an identical image to the HDMI output, and will include look-around, frame lines etc. Seems that this will be a reasonable alternative to a viewfinder extension, although we don't of course know if it can show the magic focus assist. HD-SDI will happily run 100m. I've done it.

I second the Gefen recommendation for great DVI/HDMI solutions and just to toss some wood on the NAB fire of hype - there will be some workflow announcements on Sunday that will be of interest to RED folks.

Thanks for finding that Nick. Looks like it will then output my signal far enough even if there are some limits on the monitor I can use. Will a 720P capable HDSDI monitor at the end of the 40 HDSDI line do the job. I wonder if the RED LCD is somehow better than other monitors for this.... Kinda looks like the outputs of the body contain the special qualities of the signal..... focus also?
