So everyone is clamoring for a wide or ultra wide lens, and some people are thinking about the voigtlaander, (the worlds coolest-named lens), which may or may not work well.

If i put a S16 PL prime lens on my red, i will have some severe vignetting on my shizzle. I know on some formats, (namely large format photo) you can greatly improve vignetting by stopping down a few stops. Does anyone have experience as to exactly how much vignetting i could counteract by stopping down?

Could I, for example, take a S16 12mm lens, stop down to f8, and get an acceptable image? or would it be a minor improvement, and/or only at like, f22, or something. Just a thought.

PerfectOptics,

No lens designed for S16 is ever going to cover S35 no matter if it's stopped down to f128.

I think that most large format lenses are designed with extra large image circles, too, to cover tilts and shifts. So, a 4x5 lens may cover, say, 5x7 if you don't tilt or shift at all. And stop down. And close focus. And...

This is all true. Cine lenses are not designed that way though. Even 35mm lenses (unless they are shift/tilt types) don't cover much more then their intended format.

if your lens doesn't quite cover S16/35 you will see more vignetting at F8 then F2 ...

some early zeiss 9.5mm do not cover S16 ... at F1.2 it looks like it does cover the S16 ... stop down and you will see the corners go dark ...

I think what your seeing there is a function of the optical viewfinder seeing a different size cone of light. (I think) and is not what the film plane is seeing.

3) ARRI does not list the 9.5mm as covering Super 16. This is probably due to the fall off in resolution in the extreme corners of S16 with this lens. Also there is some actual vignetting when stopped down past T11.

Here's a lens that might cover S16, I know it's little brother the 2.8 version does. Should be easy to convert to PL or at least to S/B and used with a PL adapter.
