Hmmm... I'd be very surprised if they were happy with you using it on business cards and stationary - those both imply some kind of affiliation to the company itself, not merely use of it's products.
Website is more likely, though, imo...

If no one from Red replies to this thread I would take it that a blind eye might be turned and ask no more. I wouldn't push for a response because I think that is likely to be no. After all they have a responsibility to protect their trademark.
I think Dominic is right, allowance of logo use sort of implies affiliation.

It would be great if RED would provide a special B/W eps logo for insertion at end of credits. Something with a "Shot on RED" around the outer circle of the ring.

Sure!
I tried the black and white thing, but I spoke too quick. I forgot that the core identity of RED is, eherm.. the colour red. So it may be worth having as a style guideline, a colour logo for credits. This looks great:

Well, crap! I already received my shirts I was going to wear to NAB with the RED logo and my serial number tastefully on the pocket area of the shirt.
They are collared shits, so, I guess that keeps them out of the "t-shirt" category. :clown2:
Dang, Jim. They're already here. It was going to be so cool showing up at the RED booth with my serial number on my chest. Can I please wear them?

If you're going to credit/advertise RED in your credits, shouldn't there be some sort of quality control of the product? I mean, would RED really want their name associated with say... Killer Lesbian Midgets from Hell?
I'm not sure how this works from a legal standpoint. What if the DP is inexperienced and it looks like crap?
edit: Not that there's anything wrong with being a killer lesbian little person

Actually, someone did make a shirt, and that someone learned about corporate trademarking the hard way. :bleh:
But that someone was also just attempting to show/spread the Red love, and I think the Red team knew that. :)
Anyway, yeah... I would love some official Red shirts at some point in the process. Those large vector stickers look amazing!

Why would the cinematographer's magazine of magazines post about an unreleased camera which has yet to be "proven"?
Give it 3 or so months and it will most definitely have a 3 page layout.

I'm working on putting together a business that produces RED-specific camera accessories and we'd like to at least link to www.red.com with the logo and, of course, talk about RED in the marketing materials. Any further guidelines you might have for use of the name and logo would be really useful.
Thanks!

I would have to say that this is what the stickers are for, aren't they? Put them in your window, on your car, on your cases, on your dog...
What I think they would have a problem with is if you got a huge sticker and put it on a sign in front of your business, but in the window next to an apple sticker--why not?
Of course, if you worry about advertising the riches that lie within, put it right next to the sticker that says "This premises protected by a colt 45 and a pit bull. Tresspassors will be shot then eaten."

Yes, but I think it comes down to different marketing approaches and different companies. For SI, they were eager to get prototype and demo units into the hands of reviewers and testers in order to get the word out. RED has a huge following without all that and RED has been very tight with prototypes. Some outsiders have got to see it, and RED isn't even inclined to mention specifically who they were.

About the credits.. Jim you're gonna have to make a B&W copy of the logo. We have to pay a lot to put color into those credits and I am fairly sure very few will add RED (as a color) to it since that will mean everyone is going to want their 4 color logo on the credits.
We need a 4 color logo.. And grayscale logo, and a B&W in order to fit into everything.
Just an opinion.. I got spanked by this a while ago. And don t want the same to happen to anyone else.. I also don't want anyone "altering" your logo into B&W for you.. :)

Respectfully, I think RED should put together a "Shot on RED" style guide. Complete with usage guidelines, minimum clearances, and vector versions of the logo (white or black reversed).
Jeff Kilgroe
03-20-2007, 06:24 PM
Just curious here... Why list the "shot on" or "produced with" hardware x, software y, etc.. in the credits? I always approached that as if it were advertising space at the end of my film. If Sony wants a "Shot with Sony HDV" at the end of my film credits, they had better supply me with my tape stock or discounted equipment rental, thank you very much. Of course, then there's Panavision where AFAIK, it's right there in the rental agreements about placing Panavision tags in the film credits and you're obligated on release to do so.
I don't mean to be negative about all this. I will gladly place a RED Logo and "We shot this with RED!" in my credits, just to show support for my cool new camera. But I think sometimes this is taken a bit overboard. I mean we may as well contact Fruit of the Loom and ask them for a B&W logo so we can place it in the end credits with a "Several prominent male actors wore Fruit of the Loom underwear while acting in this production".
I fully expect RED to release a media kit with proper logos in several formats all in due time. But there has to be some guidelines and legal requirements on their end as well.. They're not going to expect everyone to display RED on their end credits, nor will they want to.

Okay... now looking at them... I can tell that the Red logo would have to be cleaned up a bit. I don't think that the chainsaw motif can be used for title crawls and posters because the detail would just be imposible to make out... and it would take way from the clenliness required for impact white over black logos. Just my thoughts.

Big Lebowski, I agree that "Shot on Red" is redundant. I was only going by Jim's original design posted on page 3 or something from this thread. However, I still think that the design (for the white version) should be less 3-D and pure white to make it match even more to the others.
EDIT: Oops, it was Stephen Gentle who made the comment on "Shot on Red" being redundant. Anyway I agree with you too.
The Red logo is not a technology standard to which the end film operates on. So "shot on" i think is appropriate. Dolby, THX, DTS, DVD are all operating technology labels and shouldnt be grouped as the same. Shot on RED is like "Filmed with Panavision lenses and cameras".
But I agree, less is more

I'll take your statement a step further. Credits, to my mind, are part of the finished artwork. The signature of the painting, if you will, and are completely the domain of the primary artist of the movie. A company that demands I modify the credits is a company that is trampling my freedom of expression. If Panavision has a requirement to add them to the credits, I won't rent from them. I also won't even consider using SAG actors simply for the reason that SAG requires their logo to be put in the credits along with the statement "Special Thanks to Screen Actors Guild". They dare to demand I modify my art? Forget that! Freedom of speech is important enough that it must trump financial viability.
I think RED is a bit different though in that independant artists have rallied behind the technology and have somewhat ownership and pride in the brand. "Sticking it to the big guy!" is what RED's all about. Completely volountary ofcourse, but I think certain independant filmmakers will take pride in pioneering the technology in their respective field and wont mind showing it in their credits on a DVD or whatever.

Not only that, but it's often only industry people (movie professionals or aspiring types) who really care and will sit through the credits to see these final touches.
