What would you people recommend as front end storage.

Lets say you have a 30 day shoot, 2cams ;makes 750gig a day.
Would some macs installed, and a full blown scratch system.,

but how can good storage be provided at more a reasonable price.

Could i use self built storage to put the original R3d's on it or something like the calldigit hdpro and use this as the source for scratch and as the front end for the macs??
I know it would'nt be sufficient with 8tb, but let's say you built one with a couple of supermicrochassis based 24x1TB,

could scratch with 8tb then be sufficient to put the final 2Kdpx render on it???
Or would this system only be capable of doing commercials and short projects like musicvideos???

Hi Sven,

When it comes to storage, this old mantra really really applies:

"Better, Faster, Cheaper. Pick two."

Can you build cheap storage? Absolutely. Will you have a much higher failure rate, and have to do RAID0? Yes.

You really do get what you pay for. Storage that is well integrated, with good design, high-quality platters, good heat dissipation, power redundancy, storage redundancy, failover methodology with remote notification and power management, etc, etc. ... is certainly not the cheapest!

But when a project for a paying client is due tomorrow, I want to know that my storage is top notch, supported, with several levels of redundancy.

Best,

Ok Luki , so as I get it your advice is to take no risk at all.

I think what Lucas is saying is that there is a balance.

If you are simply using your scratch system for dailies then you can probably get along just fine with simple RAID0 stripe set which provides no redundancy whatsoever. If a drive crashes, big deal...simply replace the bad disc, rebuild the array and then load up the footage again for playout. This is the least expensive and easiest storage to set up and maintain and is also the fastest using the fewest drives.

If you are "finishing" on the box, refining edits, doing your secondary cc or any scaffolds/FX work, you probably want to be sure your project (and media) are "safe". Many people choose a RAID5 storage solution in this case.
RAID5 is a great balance between speed, cost and data protection.

In any case, you want to make you your storage system uses top-quality components and is properly built and maintained.

We like the new Promise box:

Sounds like you need about 24 Tb. This solution would work perfectly with a primary chassis and an expander--each 12.0 Tb.

You can get me offlist for more info.
