View Full Version : Complete hype...

You have been warned. If you don't like hype, STOP HERE.

I am testing Build 16 and I am so happy. While there are lots of little nits to pick at this stage, the concept of what is being done here is absolutely incredible. I find myself shaking my head in disbelief while sitting alone looking at this stuff. I'm sure there is medication for this condition. When I find out what it is, I'll post it. You'll need it.

Build 16 will get lost at NAB. You will hardly notice. The other eye candy will over-shadow this build. But it truly is monumental. It represents our graduation from the University of Camera Building. I'm sure that there is a ton more for us to learn, but the foundation is now laid for the RED future. Two years ago we knew nothing. I really can't believe that so many of you trusted us with our shiny prototype! :-)

Hated the shiny prototype, trusted the concept, the team you assembled, your dedication to making this work Jim and your thick wallet that could make it happen.

Very happy the chrome monstrosity is long gone and am very happy with the direction the aesthetic of the camera went.

We trust you because your mania is contagious. We had no choice because you had no choice. You were called, and we couldnt resist going along for the ride...Its like hitch hiking and having a Lamborgini pull over to the side of the road. " Are you gonna get in or not " Scary!!! what kind of weirdo maniac would stop to pick me up???...But only a fool would let something like that pass them by without jumping in.

I like hype. It's your danged hype that has kept me from buying a Sony EX1 so I can see what this Scarlet dealy-bob is all about at NAB.

Hearing this kind of poetic show of enthusiasm from the owner of the company reminds me of the Motown Era in music, where Barry Gordy, a then production line factory worker and music lover started Motown Records and then enlisted Smokey Robinson as artist, songwriter and later vice-president. It was a time when music lovers ran the music business. Not lawyers and deal makers, but men who had a genuine love of, and for, what they were creating. They and others of like mind changed the music industry . Jim, you are that kind of man and your enthusiasm is infectious! I'm glad to be along for the ride as we enter the "Red Era".

You should establish a "Jim Jannard Institute of Master Market Teasing",.. train students and - at the end - give them Master's Degrees in (Master) Market Teasing. :bleh:

I'd gladly attend such a program...

...

In a way.. I already am attending it... reading the REDUser forum. :sorcerer:

Hi Jim,

We're shooting quite an epic feature on Red with Anamorphic lenses in July. I know you don't want to give definitive answers, as timeframes always slip where technology is concerned, but by your rough estimation do you think Build 16 will be out of Beta and in release by July?

With my best,

How could we resist? The red apple hung right in the middle of cinematographers paradise. It was shiny, glossy, red and cheap. And it was a big sin to grab it in front of the eyes from Arri, Panavision, Sony and all the other camgods. But it looked so incredibly sweet...

One thing thats for sure is you knew 2 years ago how to create a hype... remember the first version of red.com ? A plain page with a speed-drag-car with 4k written in big letter.... no info... no contact... nothing except 4K IN BIG !!!

Happy Nab to Redteam and i'm waiting to receive my 2 wagons that ive order of your electric train M. Jannard.

Are these incremental changes that make you happy because they are meeting small improvement goals or has your dream team done something monumental?

All of us have been truly fortunate to be part of this - even in a small way. Imagine two years ago if we had looked at that prototype and walked away. I have friends at Sony - friends specifically in charge of hgh end cameras. In the last year we simply don't talk about technology or business.

What the RED team has accomplished turly shows ingeniuty and the significance of a strong leader with a vision. Kudos to every single one of the team and a huge thanks to Jim.

The next week should, once again, be the technological highlight of our year. Thanks for making that happen.

I think RED should steal what George Lucas or Larry Thorpe said at a CineAlta meeting a number of years ago - "Remember what you see to day is just the beginning - this is a bad as it will ever look. It will do nothing but get better." RED proves that true beyond any shadow of doubt!

At this point, I don't know how you can play down the hype you've been building for the last several months. If the biggest feature is, say, changing the 'purple sun' phenomenon to a more pleasant olive & fuchsia plaid... some folks are going to be disappointed. :)

In all seriousness, I'm really excited to see what you've got in store. (And since the RED ONE has tapped out our budget for the time being, free firmware updates are about the only new releases I'll be able to 'buy.')

A couple years ago they called me a fool when I showed a shiny prototype camera and said this is the future. Last year I was insane when I put down thousands on a down payment. Now I'm a genius for having foresight.

Thanks Jim

Jim,

Here's confirmation that all is well with your camera and even the picture quality in it's current state before 16. Played some footage on a client's 32" HD TV at 720 through HDMI and they swear that their TV isn't capable of producing images that good. They said they have run high end material through it, and it's just not possible for the TV to reproduce the quality. They were stunned.

Look forward to build 16.

I do remember not so long ago that these terms were used quite a bit.

Some of the posts on various sites in years past were quite humorous and to read them now is even more so.

Google this:

Funny, really funny.

Have fun at NAB, enjoy the time, make them all eat their words. Can't wait to hear from those lucky enough to attend and see all the new Big and Little things.

Jim

I'm havin' this same problem.

My dog LMAO (formerly known as Isinglass because she has these two opaquely blue eyes, but renamed LMAO because she grabs a plastic vinegar jug and bangs it off my legs until we get in a scrum over it and she surrounds it with her feet, or covers up by just laying on it while holding onto it with her teeth) has to be picked at least once a day.

Tried a flea and tick collar but she hated it so much that she found a way to get it off. If you come up with a better solution that doesn't involve chemicals, I hope you will post it.

Jim, I just wanted to say thanks. The quality of the camera's footage is helping us get investors. After just finishing one feature with it and showing off the footage, I got financing for another project (thanks to RED!)...and (possibly) 3 more.

I have to go write, I just wanted to pop on and say thanks.

Anything is possible. Anything.
