View Full Version : Possible to reassign EVF output as 2nd LCD?

My 1st A.C. asked me a simple question today. Is it possible to hook up two RED LCD's? That got me to thinking. Is it possible to switch the EVF/LCD outputs to serve either display system? Having separate operator and focus puller LCD's would be a very nice option for some.

why not just add a 7" HD-SDI monitor?

A 8" transvideo.....man it's so so sharp.
Makes the RED LCD look soft.
not that anything is wrong with the RED LCD.

Not to hijack the thread but I've always thought it would be really handy to assign different functions to each video output - e.g:
1. Red LCD only responds to zoom-in function (so focus puller can use it in-shot to check critical focus without annoying the shit out of operator & director). This would help to do away with a lot of the soft shots you see with Red material (it's a bitch to pull focus on!) It would be particularly handy if 1:1 zoom is enabled - in the meantime the Panasonic 8" has it's own zoom-in button which can come in handy for focus pullers (if you have access to one of course). It might also be handy for the focus overlay to be isolated just to the Red LCD if you wanted it (& make it appear with one of the assignable buttons - when are they getting user-programmable...should be super easy, no?)
2. One of the HD-SDIs could be programmed to display just the false colour mode for the DP's monitor (if it's side by side with director's monitor the DP could also see the real image). It would also be handy if the Red's histograms & waveforms could display on DP's monitor (my understanding is that right now they only display on EVF, Red LCD & HDMI). It's fine if the DP is operating but on jobs where you have a separate operator & DP and the DP has his own separate 17" monitor (or whatever) I'm sure he'd find it handy to monitor & adjust the exposure by remote as a shot develops (classic example would be the 5 minute Steadicam shot in "Atonement"). I know the HDMI output can display this information but I'm not sure if those screens match up to the professional ones and don't have access to one anyway (you'd also need to get a case made for it too...blah blah), when I don't see why it shouldn't be just as easily possible to make the info display on one (or both) of the HD-SDI outputs?
3. Similarly is it possible to isolate the zebras so they just output to one of the HD-SDI outputs (e.g. the DP's monitor) - in my experience directors hate seeing them on the image (v.distracting for their sensitive souls). Some operators hate looking at them too through the viewfinder so again it would be good to be able to isolate them just for the DP's monitor (i.e. just one of the HD-SDI outputs) so he could monitor them throughout a long shot.
I think basically the camera display settings, video outputs and menu options and assignable/user buttons all need to be much more modular.

I asked the same question in another thread and got no answer. I'd also like to know.
Is it possible (or will it be in the future) to run two RED LCDs at the same time?

Because it'll weigh 5lbs, require more cabling, need an additional power source [or it'll draw on the RED battery] and won't show the OSD. :)

funny, I probably wouldn't use it all the time, but like people have mentioned, there are quite a few situations and good reasons to be able to assign the output.

So what's the final answer?
Can you hook up two LCDs or not at the moment?
If not, any plans from the RED team to do so in the future?

And... uh... it's... stupid!!!
Nah, I kid. I just find that after 7 or so months of bolting a giant monitor to the camera... I'm about ready to never do it again.

I actually started a thread on this topic a little while back (2 RED LCDs or 2 RED EVFs) if anyone would like to check it out. We had some interesting ideas there and the more Features that get added to the Camera and the LCD / EVF, the more I think the ideas should be explored.
