View Full Version : Leaving camera powered up

Due to the fact that the camera takes a fair while to boot up, is it advisable to leave it powered up for long periods (ie all day if neccessary), or are there overheating issues or possible long-term damage that could be done? Also any estimate for the amount of power on time I'd get out of an IDX Endura 10 battery?
Many thanks,
Steve

There´s no timer how long the recording head was spinning.....

I leave my camera powered up for long periods of time, its fine.
Typically a REDBRICK 140Ah will keep the RED-ONE + RED-EVF + RED-LCD + RED-DRIVE in continuous record for more than 90 minutes.
There is in fact a hours meter - press the SHIFT key and JOYSTICK and it will tell you "HRS xxx" - we added that in response to customer request.

Presumably the hours meter is not so important as in a tape cam as that's what wears out, the tape heads/drums etc. This is what I was wondering, if a camera has high hours does that mean that certain components might be getting worn?

hi, as a wildlife movie maker seeing my red number coming up, I'm in desperate need for a sleep-mode, which is likely to be enabled some day (a-to-do thing, red team says, and I trust them for that too). Meanwhile, I'm trying to find out how I could spare power and get extra autonomy...do you think that disconnecting the evf or whatever monitoring option would greatly reduce power consumption ? Or is the fan mainly responsible for it ? Thanks for a reply !

One of my cameras has been on constantly since October... I mean everyday, overnight, 7 days a week. The only time it gets shut off is when it does an upgrade.

Does anyone know if we are going to be getting a standby - quick start-up option in later firmware builds ?
I know this has been a much requested feature and I would certainly love to see it.
Waiting for the light to be right on a shoot here in Tuscany is killing my battery time.

After we have finished with image quality optimization and record modes, thats the kind of issue we can turn our attention to.

I would guess that "standby" is more or the state the camera is in when it's off. On tape cams all the "save" mode does is stop the tape head spinning ready to record saving battery power, obviously not an issue with the RED.

I found that a duel system takes care of the time issue on set.
