I'm taking the delivery of my red one very soon. I ordered a Nikon mount. Red can install it for $300 labor charge. I'm thinking about to do it myself. I won't be swapping different mounts any time soon. So once the Nikon mount is properly installed. I'm good for a while. My still lens + Red one would be my indie setup for quite sometime before I can pay off the Red one and make some $$$ to buy Red lenses. So my questions are:
Has anyone installed a Nikon mount by himself?
What was the process?
Tutorials?
How big is the risk?
Thanks.

We are developing a NIKON MOUNT tutorial for you guys. Not super-hard if you are good with Allen keys. If you want us to do it here, we have decided to not charge for this service so we can do it before it ships. Just let your BOMB SQUAD rep know.

It's really easy. Heck, if I can do it, ANYONE can do it.

I did my swap with my local camera teck. I could have done it on my own.
However if the good folks at Red will do it for you that would be much safer.
There is a youtube how to video if you want to go it alone.

It's easy, just be gentle with the hex screws.

A grinder, tig welder and about 12 minutes.

Birger says: the Birger mounts (Canon, Nikon...) will not need any work of additional collimation after installed there.

I was nervous, a bit dubious, but it's not hard. Just have a clean work place, go slow, get a good handled 2mm hex wrench -- the screws in the PL mount are in tight, or were on my camera. Have your lens tissue, balloon if you want it, a container for the screws. And take your time. I'd say 20 minutes the first time, 12-15 minutes subsequent
When I switched out the PL mount for the Nikon, the mount was still dead on as far as focus went. And when I put the PL mount back, still everything solid. Also switched out the PL for a BNCR custom mount. That also went smoothly. And again, perfect focus.
The only problem we had was with the wire contact with the extra wire being a bit large for the hollowed out space with the wire. We ended up gently pushing the extra wire in small folds back into the camera body to have enough room for the connector in the hollow.

get a good handled 2mm hex wrench .
I thought all the screws are SAE/imperial. Are the ones for the mount metric?

Thanks for the free installation concession on the Nikon mounts. I would much rather have you guys do it. Red is cool.
