View Full Version : ELD flat panels for car
Hi
I'm trying to find where I could buy ELD flat panels to light a car. This is the system Beebe used in Collateral but the panels where made expecially for the shoot by a fabricant of ELD panels for lcd screens.
So as I can't afford made to measure panels, I was wondering if you guys knew where I could find similar stuff.
I know there's the the mini-flo (http://www.kinoflo.com/12VDC%20Systems/Mini-Flo/Mini-Flo.htm) but it's not enough diffused, the light is to strong.
Thanks

You might look into these -

There are several sizes available. I haven't used them, but plan on looking into them at NAB -

Damn, that's exactly what I'm looking for! Thanks Dennis. As I live in France, it'll be difficult for me to go to the NAB but I would really appreciate if you could take some pictures, or even some videos or anything else that can give me more informations about these lights, if you don't mind of course.
Thanks
Tyno

Doesn't look bad Parisrem and it's aproximately the same price. Thanks
And thanks a lot Dennis.
Actually that's not exactly what I'm looking for. This is what they used in Collateral. The original purpose of this panels is to be cellphones screens and of course it was custom built, but I'm sure something similar can be found (in this world). Maybe laptop screen could work, but I don"t know if they are flexible http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-DELL-INSPIRON-6400-15-4-WXGA-LAPTOP-LCD-SCREEN_W0QQitemZ120240818871QQihZ002QQcategoryZ315 69QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I have bunch of them, they are awesome! I got them off a shoot a while back. The transformers can put out a highpitched whine so they need to be far away from any mic's. Also don't bend the panels to much or you get weird color shifts. I've always called them ELP not ELD.
Great! Do you have some pictures from the shoot or even some clips from the movies you used them in? That would be awesome as their website only show ad pictures.
Thanks

I don't know if you saw this page on the Luminous film website. They look the same as what you're talking about, I think.

and a pricelist

Not sure how well they work, but they seem fairly cheap/reasonable.

Actually that's chat I'm looking for, it's a flatlite reseller, I remember I've been there since I've been looking for that but I hadn't seen the price list: it's not that expensive! 64$ the A4 panel, that means about 7 or 8 for one car (because it's really easy to move so you can use the same ones for different shots) so around 500$.

don't forget you need a $100 transformer to drive each light.
Ow. Damn. Maybe there's a way to plug them all on the same one? But that's not my first preocupation for the while, I'll take care of that when it'll be time.

I shot a little video this morning of the system.
http://www.freedomfromgravity.com/stuff/elp.MOV (http://www.freedomfromgravity.com/stuff/elp.MOV)
Things I forgot to say: The transformers are "tuned" to specific size panels. So a transformer for the large panels might not drive the small ones or visa-verce. Mine actually has hand written tuning notes on the bottom telling me how many sq inches it can drive.
Also I shouldn't have called it a "loud" tone, but to an audio guy it would be a nightmare.
I also said it puts out "a lot of light" thats a little misleading too. For what it is (a flat sheet of paper) it puts out a lot of light, but it's by no means a huge source. I haven't done the Foot candle measurements or anything scientific.
Sorry about shooting it in my bathroom, it was the only dark room.
Thanks a lot, great video. Does the bip sound come from the transformer or is it only the loud sound? And does it only come from the transofrmer, because in this case I guess we could suppress it by covering it with some material, while if it's also the panel it's a bigger problem.
I also have something to ask you but please just do it if you have time, or maybe if one day you do some red tests. I would really love to see what it looks like close to the camera, I mean like just above it, as if you were shooting in a car. So just do it if one day you do some test, I don't want to bother you with that.

It's not a "Bip" sound. It' actually a high pitched whine. Like really bad florescent fixtures. The panel only emits the sound in some situations. I haven't found the magic formula to get it to do it or not. A lot of it has to do with what it's mounted to.

I looked into this a long time ago I believe they have them in different colors. They are pricey
Different colors? great, they don't mention it on the website I think.
So Mike I guess the sound which comes from the panels probably happens when there are interferences.
