It's a classic. portrait shooters used to sewear by them.
But they never made an AF version.

But what about the 105mm AF DC f1:2.0? AF, manual aperture ring, solid construction...The De-focus Control (DC) seems a little screwy, but it can be turned off and would be non-functional on RED anyway. I've only played with one of these once, but it seemed like a nice lens. B&H has the import version for $799.

The 135mm f2 is another great lens. The same as the AI version I reviewed but with IF andthe defocus control.
The DC works on the principle of selective diffraction and could be used on Red.

The 105 f2.5 is, as has been stated, a classic. I've got one on my shelf. But that's just it - it's on my shelf, not in my camera bag.
For me it's a little soft - I guess a lot of portrait shooters like the flattery that that gives to subjects, but it's not really my cup of tea. I've tried a few and it certainly seems to be a feature of the lens in general rather than one particular lens or production batch.
For my money the 105mm f1.8 AI-S is far, far superior. It's also a lot more expensive of course, but what's new?!
