First shot I've seen with a person for scale. With the rods and accessories it would obviously get big but my first impression is how compact the camera itself is.
That looks like a vanilla standard SATA cable, whatever the fancy connector is on the camera. Whenever I handle those cables I get the feeling that they were designed to be installed once and never flexed afterwards; do they hold up to use?

Do you guys have the body design locked down yet? I know a lot of people are wondering what the dimensions are. Scaling off that lens (which I'm assuming is your Cooke S4 65mm), Boris looks about 13" long.

seems like the first red reservation holders will get cnc machined bodies. will that change after a certain number to a casting process or will all 1500 reds be cnc milled?

The red rail brackets looks like it is made from aluminium?
The brackets are not disimilar from what you see at the top of gearboxes. Same type of rods sliding through bracket type of thing with alen screws holding them secure. This works great in the motor indusrty when adjustment of the screws is only ever done in a major repair situation.
I worry that if the red rails are so made with alen screws securing the plates then one would need to be very careful to avoid overtightening these screws as aluminium threads are very easiliy stripped.
I trust red have thought all of this through already:biggrin:
The batteries look big and heavy, no wonder ,many are looking at just using flash as an alternative in some instances.

Challenging and quality footage will speak to the camera's abilities.
The VOLUME of footage on display will speak to the workflow and is equally important.
If at NAB it looks like it was HARD to put the 4K demo of footage together, then that's where the newest crop of critics will roost...
Michael Schrengohst
03-21-2007, 02:59 PM
I agree, in addition to the 16'x9' monster screen, RED needs to showcase
the same and other footage on everything from iPods to 60" Plasma screens.
All the critics will be out so I would not limit the RED footage showings to
60 sec blasts on the monster screen.

I believe that if they show quality footage at NAB, they'll have enough interest to keep the production lines busy for a while! Lots of footage is nice but I don't know how long they've had fully functional prototypes (for example with a live video output, unlike Frankie just last month when they had to monitor at 3 fps: http://www.reduser.net/forum/showpost.php?p=11443&postcount=93 )
If they show "challenging" footage like low light or harsh lighting, I bet people will just say the camera is too noisy or it's not handling the highlights well. Unless it's something so extreme that existing cameras could obviously not shoot it, and I'm not sure what that would be.
It would be fun to see A/B comparisons against other cameras, but you know that skeptics will never be convinced until they can oversee such a test themselves. And who can blame them- I'd like to try those tests myself, of course :-).
Jim Arthurs
03-21-2007, 03:25 PM
'Challenging" was a poor choice of wording on my part. I mean esthetic and striking, pushing contrast ratios to as close to film dynamic range limits as is possible with the sensor. And all of it very polished and pro; be it nature, sports, or dramatic lighting.
Personally, if you're standing there in the booth watching the demo reel, and it's still spooling new footage that hasn't looped back on itself in 15 minutes, you've proved the point of workflow. I'd even ditch everything done 'til now, milkgirls and all, showing all new.
I'm sure they haven't had prototypes out in the field much yet... but that even helps prove the ease of workflow more if you can put the goods together in the next few weeks. Just my two cents...

There's not much point in milling 100 camera bodies if Red is planning to create a casting mold. Might as well make the mold first so that all the cameras come out identical and reap the casting cost benefits straight away. Then again, maybe it'll be CNC milling for all the cameras since the volume is so small. But I don't expect they'll go half and half on the manufacturing process.

Even if they are cast, ( and I would assume this would be precision diecasting) they will still be CNC'ed, as this is the way to do it. I would also assume (you know where that word can lead) that the nose and the base plate with it's intergrated rod mounting system and any other bits with complex shapes will also be diecast. After all they don't hog Arris or Panaflexes out of solid chunks of aluminum!

May I suggest that once the RED project is complete (and only then) that Jim Jannard start a new project on making cars with zero emission - if you think building a 4K camera in a year is a great task, then surely you (Jim) must be the man for the job!

A Cast is as good as its mould. As long as the mould is polished and finished with precision, so will the cast be. If a mould is meticulously engineered, the seams should be near invisible. and any imperfections can be polished off anyway. Aluminium is easy to machine. The other thing is the powder coating. This conceals all minute imperfections that happen during the casting process. So the end result should look pretty much the same as a milled piece (without it being steel or whatever)

Kalone, you are German and anyway you know better with German language. Arnie is an Austrian>>Styrian>>Styria>>German: Steiermark. The capital city is Graz. By the way I wil go tomorrow in Graz and stay over the weekend to see a couple of Austran films at Diagonale-Festival des Österreichischen Films. It always used to amuse me how Panavision would do all that, then plate the camera body in 24K gold, and then for the final master touch, paint it battleship gray!
I know the reason they did that was simply to reduce interference on their old tube panavids, but boy it had people shaking their heads and muttering among themselves.
