WOW, that's techno-porn if I ever saw it!
And the Epic...and Red Ray... so many toys, so little time.
And a matte box, and pro lcd, camera case and carbon x rods.... what more can you do!!!
I'm still so completely blown away by these guys!

Under $3K.
Wonder if that is for a turnkey cam.

Too bad it's a fixed lens. I was hoping for a handheld B4 mount camera.

David, it does include the lens, so it looks like it's turnkey except for the memory cards.

Can't tell how large the camera is... How small is it?

We're definitely buying a few of these!
I'm pretty disappointed that it didn't have a nikon/canon mount but it does match almost all of my top 5 from the list thread.

hmm .. T2.8 on a 2/3 sensor means not significant better DOF than 1/3 @T1.6 .. and no audio is very problematic. But the price is great, no question. Is the lens interchangable ?

Guess I better book for NAB 2009 to plunk that cash down.
Where did this $3000 rumor(?) come from?

The LCD is 4.8" so just say 5"
So, judging by the pics at redmodz.com it's about 3" wide x 3" deep (without lens length) and about 6-7" high. Form factor very...."Sony."
I believe "Pocket-sized" was how it was described by Jim.
Wow.
Just...wow.
And at under $3000 (so the story goes) they're going to sell a LOT of cameras.

That is what I was really waiting for - small and >2k.
Nikon/canon mount would be very nice indeed, but I guess one would lose auto function then... but I'm sure that it will be addressed along the way.
I love love love the price!

Anyone have shots of the lens itself on the Scarlet?

Sweet camera, but you'd need a pretty big pocket for the whole setup, including LCD and handles.

Thanks for your analyzation.
I guess little smaller than HVX200?

Not necessarily. Couldn't they have a nikon mount with their own special auto lens that comes with it? My nikon lenses focus WAY faster and more accurately than the HVX.

The main thing I want to know is how you are supposed to hold that thing without the red grips?

I so want one, though having all the auto features, but no ability to record sound does seem a bit strange. Fixed lens and no audio. Hmmm.
If it can't record sound, it would be nice to have something that can attach to allow you too record it in camera.
Where is this under $3000 coming from? Engadget HD just reported it as well, though no idea where it is coming from.

Everything is fine, but price is still rumor.. i guess someone misunderstood the 3k resolution with $3k.
3k is not too much for a 2/3? May lost some dynamic range and low light capability. A small camera is to bring outside the studio, where not always there is sunshine... anyway its a great toy and I will be in line :D'

NO Audio?
Is this confirmed?
Does RED have a recommended audio solution in mind?

I bet the adult film industry is gonna stand in line for Scarlet once she's available. Epic looks like something geared towards the big studio productions and I guess One will probably fill the role of indie camera with Scarlet complementing it or replacing it when preferable to the One. I can only imagine what kind of machines would be needed to tackle Epic 5K footage in post. Scarlet looks exactly as I hoped it would and I can't wait to see the first footage from her once she's ready. Definitely looks like a good blind buy but we'll wait and see what develops!

I don't like the ballistic-housing and the fixed lens very much.
Apart from that: Sold. At least if it fits my pockets.

Now that everybody knows a bit more about Scarlet everything in life should be OK. Now we can all enjoy this new and wonderful portable digital motion picture camera! Oh… wait… The only thing though is we will have to take a year off from shooting and wait ‘til maybe April of next year to have it in our hands and start shooting all those wonderful features, music videos, commercials that we have in our dreams. Sure, it is your new camera but it will take a little while longer to get it. Jim said that some would be disappointed with Scarlet and I am sure many will be, especially having to wait a year to get one. Why announce a camera if you won’t have it ready for another year? It is Red One all over again. Isn’t technology great!

Assuming your on a preorder list. I could imagine the list is going to get deep when the time approaches.
If stuck with a fixed len, I was hoping for something faster. It's obvious why it's not ;)
I'll wait for Scarlet 2 unless RED pulls some magic out on this one.

With air travel getting more expensive and weight restrictions getting heavier on airlines this type of camera will be easy to carry on! I've been paying increased over weight charges (I know the client pays ...) on my gear in the last year, so, anything to get the size and weight down is a good thing. Wonder about the audio question though?

this is amazing. I thought it would only be 2K, which I would have been happy with. But what about price? If its below $5000 im in.

My fiancee is at NAB, and asked the RED reps straight out, and they said it was in fact going to be 3000.
Personally I would rather pay another thousand and have onboard sound capabilities. Otherwise it will need some sort of timecode out so you can sync the sound with the picture. Hell even if they made it 6000 with onboard sound recording they could take over the market completely if they could make them fast enough!

According to Mike Curtis it will do Audio. He has a bunch of really good data.

it's great for naturalistic shooting, documentaries, where there is no dialogue to be absolutely recorded live.
And you can always stick a small DAT and a mic or more modern digital audio recorder on it, when you go into the wild by yourself and need to record sounds. When you start recording, you push two "RECORD" buttons instead of just one. That's it. It's not a big problem for me.
I'm happy. This camera seems excellent, it must be incredibly useful.
I'd never trade image quality just for the ability to record audio in the camera anyway.
I am very happy that it is no less then a 3k camera, and the price is very very good, to say the least.
