Ok, ASSUMING, all the accessories will work with Scarlet & ASSUMING there will be interchangeable lenses, here’s what my Scarlet buy would look like:
Scarlet 3000
Red Pro Monitor (7in) 2500
LCD Cable 180
Red Arm-9in (to mount LCD) 150
EVF 2950
EVF Cable 180
Power Pack 1400
Base Production Pack 1250
Shoulder Dovetail 550
(8) 8GB Compact Flash 1592
B4 to PL adapter 3500
Matte Box 750ish
Total: $18002
well over the $8-10K I was hoping for & that still doesn’t include the 2/3in ENG style zoom lens I would want to use.

You don't need half that stuff. A 7" monitor and an EVF? This isn't a red one...

I doubt that many are going to go with a complex setup even close to that unless they already own the accessories because they have a Red One. Seems to defeat the idea of light and portable.

Scarlet (if it has a built-in LCD) + Couple CFs + Cheapo shoulder mount + Mattebox = 5000ish?
That would be my setup :)

Most of the work I do is ENG/EFP & I need something that can be rested on the shoulder (hence the EVF) but can also be slapped on some sticks & shoot loooong stuff (hence the need for the LCD, after all, who wants to hunch over squinting into a viewfinder for 30+ minutes? A flip out monitor would be fine & save a chunk of $$)
I’ve been looking at the Red for a long time & I’ve been reading a lot of complaints about how cumbersome, uncomfortable, & top heavy it is when shoulder mounted.
I didn’t say this was the solution for everybody, but this setup would give me the flexibility I need.

Haha what? You're quoting lens adapters? LCD's and EVF's? Dude.
I'm thinking more like 5k if the rumored price of 3k is real.

I agree... i bet REd will be coming out with acc. just for the Scarlet....
i don't expect to be shipping out more than 5k for one

"Dude" you got a problem with the type of camera needs that I have?
Read the original post & pay particular attention to the "ASSUMING" parts.
The above gives me the camera "I" need & can put into use for the work I do without spending $50+K on a RED One.

With all that stuff hanging off the cameras, either flavor of Red for that matter, I don’t think they are well suited for ENG/EFP stuff. Maybe I am wrong. The Scarlet may be lighter but all those accessories attached to it may make it tough to use handheld. Then again, everybody that might want to buy it will have to find out by themselves if it works or not for them when it comes out, NEXT YEAR.

Woa. Relax.
It really is out of line to be laughing at another's personal thoughts on their personal purchase.
He did not say the $18K was going to be what everyone would have to spend.
Also, was it just me or did I see "ASSUMING" in Capital letters showing emphasis.
Most will only spend 5 Grand, maybe less, but there will be others who want to spend $18 Grand.
With the whole "interchangeable lenses", there has been talk of making a petition to Jim, and asking for a model of Scarlet that has interchangeable lenses. As there was only a prototype shown today, anything can change in a year.

The most expensive part will be needing to buy two. By the time Scarlet comes out, the back-orders will be insane, if you are lucky enough to get one, you'll probably never be able to find one for rent (lower rental, much broader demand, fewer rental houses will carry). At least with Red One, within another 6 months or so, if your gear goes out, you'll be able to rent a replacement in most markets really quickly. I wouldn't even think of ordering Scarlet without ordering two.
Just my "two" cents...

Hey Capainscarlet,
These guys might have alot of posts, but most have so much post, not cause they're knowledgeable, but because they're quick to write without thinking.
18K is not outrages. If you go to the Dvx forum, there's a couple of guys there that spent around 15 thousand for a complete HVX kit.
Don't listen to these guys, just do your thing

3,000? For a 3k camera? Come on, isn't that just a bit low? 8-10 grand sounds more likely and still affordable. But 3 grand? I paid more for my 8 core than that.

you know what, if the captain doesn't want to be critizised on a public forum for his outlandish assumptions, maybe he should wait until he has the correct information before he makes absurd and uninformed posts. The package he described was well over his projected $8-$10k even without the camera...
This thread is a perfect example of how the RED system works. You can choose by your own if you want to spend 18K for a Scarlet++ or lower it with 10K and be happy with that. I was trying the D3 (Nikon) a couple of days ago with a ~5K lens and a ~2K one. There is difference in quality but I know a whole lot who can live with the 2k one and make superb pictures with that alone. The RED team have just started to come out with their products, and I’ll bet by 2009 there will be a whole lot more that will fit scarlet right on the money.
Scarlet is more than I hoped it would be.

Before I suggest you go back & re-read my original post, might I suggest you go back to school to learn comprehension.
BTW, I think you need to drop the "disko" from your nik. Take it as a little constructive “criticism” that you so eloquently advocate.

Yeah I'd say for most cases you're going to see sub 5k Scarlet packages...I mean yeah you could easily deck it out up to 18k if thats what kind of work you do. If you can afford it, more power to you.
As a student, I'll be using my Scarlet to make personal projects where I'm not as concerned about going nuts with the cinematography (But thats not to say one couldn't); to me it's really a perfect convenient, high quality camera to have to pick up and shoot some stuff, edit it quickly, and work on directing/visual story telling. Thats what I love about this camera; its what I've been dreaming of for years now. I think if you look at Scarlet as being a very versatile camera akin to RED ONE, you start to appreciate it more. It can be a point click on the go camera, or you can deck it out and make it a mini studio rig. With a built in LCD, fixed zoom lens, and solid state, at $3k..this is it for me, and I'm sure a lot of other people as well.

Hey Captain -
Just my two cents for you - Hopefully you saw the post from Deanan saying Scarlet has a built in LCD, so you won't need that. I also feel that you might not need/want the EVF (which is like buying a Scarlet in and of itself), but if you want one, good for you. Also, the shoulder dovetail comes with the production base pack, do you need 2?
Cables, I hope you're ordering them as extras (you should) because those items come with one each.
Just trying to help you save some dough.

Thanks Kowboy,
Saw it. Confirmation of the built-in LCD is great. Would I still need the 7in monitor? Depends. Among other reasons, some steadi-cam Ops can work with a heads-up flip-out LCD. Others absolutely need the head-down setup when flying cameras on their rig.
For my purposes, I also need a camera that can be shouldered & an LCD 3-inches from your nose doesn’t work for some people. I really like what Sony did with their EX-3 LCD/viewfinder, it’s the best of both worlds & would save another $3000+
You are right-on regarding the dovetail (missed that as I was perusing the accessories).
As more details come out about Scarlet’s features, I’m positive my list will grow/shrink. I’m still holding out hope for a removable lens (although it’s not looking too good), I mean if Canon did it on the XL & Sony on the EX-3……
I’d really hate to have to change my name to CaptainEX-3 come 2009
