View Full Version : Hey Red, thanks for making Angelina Jolie look ugly

It's been apparent for quite a while that she's not looking her best anymore, but it's taken the Wanted trailer to really put it in perspective. It made her...skin look normal, even sickly, and her weight loss very apparent. Things that weren't so visible in her recent movies.
Looking at that trailer I get the impression that it's only had mild color work done on it.
And there is a LOT of noise even in semi-shadow areas, really approaching midtones. The general feel was that of a production that was not very careful with light levels.
Very blown-out highlights in a day scene with people toting guns on roofs (talk about ridiculously edited trailers: voice over - "bla bla assasins", cue for quick two shot of people loading up on guns, cue for me to feel queasy).
I've seen much better footage shot on the RED. There's one short clip of a motorbike shot at night through a tunnel. I doubt they used extra lights there (on the other hand, tunnels do tend to be bright places), and it had no noise (and a similar feel to the metal surfaces as the Wanted trailer).
P.S: I watched this in 720P, so there should have been no issues with that

Instead of bashing anyone right off the bat, you should do some research.
It's been posted, by the VFX SUPER of Wanted, what was shot with the RED. Guess what. What you're referring to from the trailer was shot on film, not the RED. Search the forum and see for yourself. And then post your apology to the RED Team.
Welcome to Reduser BTW.

Can it be a coincidence by chance - don't think so....

Uhm...I'm not bashing the RED.
I clearly mentioned that I've seen RED footage shot in similar conditions, which looked perfect (as in, no noise).
The title is sarcasm. It's not targeted at the RED. It's about the illusions that film gives birth to. I've never seen Angelina Jolie look like that. It's simply different in 4k.
I believe if there was any bashing going on, it was directed towards the production team. I want to know how they managed to misuse the RED in order to get those shots. At least two of them I am sure they were shot on it, outside night car-chase scenes, because of the look of the metal on the cars.

Essor
04-12-2008, 04:42 AM
It's not.
It did not make Angelina Jolie look ugly because of lack of resolution, or sharpness, or poor color rendering, or anything that relates to a camera's performance.
It made Angelina Jolie look ugly in comparison to what she has looked like until now.
And it did that because of its qualities of sharpness and resolution and color.

Essor, you're probably wrong about those shots you think were shot on RED. Do a search for Wanted and read the threads. RED was tested on the shoot.
And I seriously doubt anyone could spot RED footage on the screen, let alone in a trailer!

Then my post becomes "crappy night-time lighting. in other news, angelina jolie has aged tremendously"
In other other news, there is a fun shot in which a red car is composited onto an overturned truck, and as it drives off its edges, the VFX guys made it fly up at a 45 degree angle for two frames.

You allude to seeing the trailer in 4K here. Yet you claimed to have seen it in 720p in your first post in this thread. Which was it and where did you see it? The venue will affect quality and there could also be some [corruption] of the codec. Give the piece a fair shot before you carve it into the living rock of the internet online forum. Considering this thread's title:
RED is nothing more than a tool. So when you see "bad" RED footage, it's not RED's fault but rather the DP/user that's shooting said "bad" footage.
You can't blame the hammer for the bent nail.

Christ K.Berlin, that is not a joke. It is a third grade limerick without the rhythm.
Had I done research? In the links you guys gave me, it is still mentioned that the RED was used for filming special effects plates.
Special effect plates are similar in most every way with regular shots. Most of the shots I was initially referring to were special effects heavy car chase sequences.
And I find myself forced to add again that the reason for my amazement is not that the RED has heavy noise, which I know it doesn't, but that the production team of Wanted would use it in a way that would result in that much noise.
P.S: I doubt RED would keep a mention on their front page of Wanted being shot on their camera if it hadn't been true.

I haven't seen the trailer in 4k. I've seen it in 720P.
However, the general qualities of a 4k shoot, the majority of the edges it captures and much of the detail - so to say, the feel of the image is kept alive even when downgraded to 720p video.
Plus, a codec will not add noise to selective areas, like shadows. It can selectively clip detail, but not selectively add noise.

hey essor...welcome to reduser. where one slightly mis-spoken post draws the wrath of the community. the like of kowboy (and many others) are often like a pack of wild dogs waiting to pounce on anyone who says ANYTHING that is perceived as a knock against RED.
for the record, i totally 'got' your post, and understood from the beginning you were referring more to the crew's work than the camera. And yes, it is now known (or assumed) that the RED was only used as a test on that shoot, and no footage made the final cut.
but again, welcome to the RED community, and have fun on here. i think you will.

Stop it guys I've seen this before!!!
This is a man bound by his computer, maybe a post guy. He has just quit smoking, it's up to 3 months now and he picked up coffee to have something to do. The coffee led to another and another, until eventually he's so strung up on it he doesn't know what to do. So he goes to the machine room to sort out some cables. After an hour of swearing he figures he hates the world and takes a coffee on the way back to the computer. As he zips on it with shaky hands he figures he wants to bash at something, so he finds a forum to be a smart ass on. Only problem is that whatever he says will never make sense it will be a bunch of I hate the world....
Leave the guy alone as he's trying to quit and who can blame him if the daily little doze of Angelina is ruined ....how is he now to relax?

Frederik, I find your ability to identify minor archetypes inside a subculture such as ours most refreshing.
With a bit more practice, you'll stop force-feeding said archetypes down people's throats. Reality will then move towards warmer hues, and you'll no more feel a need to project your coffee drinking habits upon others.
I can't wait to talk to you then. I'm sure you'll have become at least a passable human being by that time.

Probably because they didn't know how RED wasn't going to be used in the final movie until everyone else found out. RED was there, was shot alongside film for a number of scenes and the director and DP thought RED looked great. BUT they shot the entire film on film... so cutting in a few RED scenes just for the sake of doing it wouldn't make much sense. The final cut isn't done. There's a chance RED will save a shot somewhere.

You do understand that with it being in the first few images under the "SHOT ON RED" portion of the Red site, it is suggested, even implied that it was literally shot on red.
The problem doesn't lie with me, but with Red's site. They should either remove it or mention exactly how it was 'shot on red'.
There would be no shame in having a secondary category of movies on which Red participated, but were not actually shot with it.

I'd agree with that. They've got a great quote saying the DP and director couldn't tell RED from Film. That's all they need. But they didn't have that information until maybe a week ago and they're pretty busy over there with firmware updates and NAB, ya know? Maybe you could cut 'em a little slack this time.

Because I wasn't accusing them of anything in the first place.
YOU, AND YOUR POSSE (not yours, personally, of course) OF LOVABLE RED FANS, accused me of not knowing what the real deal is with the movie.
