This is our first RedUser post as an educational organization. Are there any other schools out there with a Red One reservation?

I know Chapman University doesn't have one, though I can think of a professor or two who will want one when NAB rolls around. We're a very Panasonic and Arri school.

I've heard from fellow graduates that Brigham Young University reserved one, but I know the people who buy equipment for their film department and I don't think they were proactive enough to put in al reservation. Although, I can see them getting one soon.

BYU has a very strong motion media program, including a sizeable film studio lot, a television station, and production trucks. It wouldn't surprise me to see them make a move on some RED One cameras...

Although through my both two reservations in order to my upcoming purchase, I already have several commitments with educational institutions crossing Europe and United States related to them as soon as I might be able to supply the service.

I have worked with BYU and KBYU for may years. AS of now they have no planes for RED. But I keep the motion pic guys up to speed on the goings on. And they are really looking forward to take my cameras for a spin. Good program by the way very hands on..

I really enjoyed it. The faculty were great and never doubted my decision to go there. I also worked for KBYU for a couple of years under Glenn Anderson. Great guy. Learned a lot while I was there, but glad to move onto bigger and better things.

What I'm gathering is, that for the near term anyway, we're the tip of the spear on the educational front.

Strongbad: When'd you graduate? I was in the film program at BYU from 01-04 (Todd Hamilton btw). The amount of 16mm and 35mm projects we worked on as undergrads was amazing (especially comparing to other films) but I felt the administration's theory of making it "as difficult as possible for the students to get access to it because that's the way it is in the real world" was weak (that's what Tom Lefler told me)...

No RED Reservations at public colleges as they cannot front money in that way, but Apple is "dumping' hundreds of high end media workstations with a full software load right now on California colleges - probably clearing inventory for what is coming down the road at NAB.

Make cider while the Apples are cheap,

P.S. Isn't that RED just a Mac peripheral or dongle - as there's always money for computer gear... ;)

Yes it is small but good. And Glen is a very good guy. Have had allot of very interesting talks about RED with him when I was up there last month. He dose not see the impact in the broadcast world but dose realize, the revoulution it will bring in the film industry..

Well maybe those other institutions don't, but I would imagine that perhaps some faculty may have reservations. ie. The dept. head here got their own personal reservation at NAB last year and will have their Red in hand long before the school's arrives.

Well time will tell. My friend is doing some freelance motion graphic work for them (kinobairn according to these forums) and the footage he is working off of is from the XDCam. If I remember right, they bought 3 of them last year. Sadly enough, I think they will outgrow them really quickly. But Ira and Mary Lou like to donate money to them, so they are always "hurting" to buy things.

Yeah, according to some of the faculty that I talked to the other day, they don't have plans to get a red. Which doesn't surprise me, they'll come around after they use the one that we're buying :) I'm sure a lot of film schools will be buying Reds in the near future.

I'd hope USC could bundle a few Reds with part of the 170 mil Lucas donated to them? I am attempting to transfer there in the next year or so and would be pretty bummed if they didn't have one.

SDSU is planning on getting one if it turns out that it can do everything it claims to do. Right now they have several XDCAMs ordered. I wish they'd just buy a 35mm package for us to work with...
