End of story... stop whining... GEESH! Do the people complaining even WORK in this industry or have any CLUE what gear like this costs? Look at the 1/3" HVX. A pocket 2/3" camera is a revolution. A price point of $3K is just nuts.

All the ones that I can think of are over $15,000,
without lens (another $5,000 - $25,000). http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/shop/1886/Lenses_2_3_Lenses.html

A heavy burden is to carry http://www.millan.net/minimations/smileys/yoda1.gif. Plus, buy the lens. Plus (aaand this is a big one) buy the tripod. And the P2 that you will be able to use it just on P2 cameras. I can use CF in my D300 or Canon or Fuji and then throw it to RED. :)

Scarlet is King. err, Queen.

Most USED 2/3" SD cameras are going to sell for 3X what the Scarlet is set for. A body only HD 2/3" cam is going to START at 5X what Scarlet is selling for if you go for one without a tape drive.

The features being whined about are silly.

Hello John:

Where is the information on the rebate. Isn't list price $14,000? Do they really have a $5,000 rebate on a $14,000 camera?

I saw that was a floor model and used for demo.

Yeah. I'm really surprised coming back from NAB to see some of the stuff going on around here.

I knew some people would be disappointed based on Scarlet speculation threads that indicated a number of people had fooled themselves into thinking Scarlet would be a 2K RED for $5k. C'mon. Not gonna happen.

So when I saw Scarlet was actually 3K, 2/3" for $3k with a lens, battery and LCD I couldn't f'n believe it. I was like - OMG, those guys are going to be thrilled. There's nothing like that out there.

Whatever.

If there's one thing I took home from NAB it was this. Shut up and go shoot. 'Cause there's great stuff coming from all kinds of cameras and adapters and configurations right now.

(so here I am posting... but come Sunday I'm gone for two or three weeks shooting)

I sold an AG-HPX500-EFP package sans lens, last week to a customer. Its a $2000 rebate and a 5 year warranty, AG-HPX500 camcorder and viewfinder, SHAN-TM700 tripod adaptor plate, and Black PortaBrace camera bag for $11k minus end user rebate customer had it for $9k when all was said and done.

but you can get a PMW-EX1 1/2 camera for less at $6.4K but unless you use the HD-SDI your dealing with 35MB video on SXS cards.

I believe B&H Photo had the rebate promo. You can check with them. Also dvxuser.com had some info on it.

Panasonic AG-HPX500 2/3" Shoulder Mounted P2 Camcorder, 1080p/1080i/720p, NTSC/PAL

Looks like when you "add to cart" on B&H, the actual price is $9,995.95 and they show that the $2,000 rebate is on top of that. Total price then would be $7,995 before tax & shipping assuming no accessories, NO LENSES and no add-ons.

P.S. Good thing about threads and posts like this one is if someone is searching Google for these cameras, RedUser.net will show up in the search results for those terms and they'll find out about Red if they didn't already know. :)

Sounds even better. It has been reported, and I believe it, that you can get good image with less expensive old SD lenses. They are way cheaper than the HD ones. Also Letus is about to intruduce a relay lens that conects the 500 directly to their 35mm lens adapater. I don't know about price on that.

Yes, but if you follow the route of a relay lens Scarlet still wins as it has it, its cheaper, lighter, shorter and the important thing; the chips and the codec.

If I would be Sony or Pana I wouldnīt like to be alone with Jim in the thunderdome... :gun:

No doubt about it. The Scarlet is going to be fantastic....in a year, hopefully. In the meantime there are people that need a 2/3 inch camera tomorrow so they can start shooting work the day after and they are surely going to take advantage of this deal tomorrow. Thats the difference about reality today.

the Aqua. It has interchangeable lenses, shoots 5K, has 6 XLR inputs and fits in your shirt pocket.

and it makes coffee,

it costs about a $1,200 and you get a free lollipop if you buy a CF card with it

I'm seriously considering the HPX-500. $8K for the camera head is a steal. I shoot with it all the time and the picture is gorgeous.

I already have sticks and p2 cards.

I've been looking at some HD glass....THAT is where it hits you.

And yes, you can put GOOD SD glass on it and it looks just fine for 85% of my clients.

Haven't shot with it yet - but at that price ...

Interesting times.

edit: Until Scarlet comes out - looks to be a good option.
How much could you lose ? couple of grand maybe 3 .... <shrug>
Depreciation on the books takes care of that.

I've tested and you can find camera reports everywhere.
It's big camera and better dynamic range than HVX200.
But, all depend on glass and industry standard pixel-sift CCD.
If you use HD glass that about 20K, pix looks beautiful.
If you need now, you must get it.
It's not bad camera.

Scarlet is different camera.

Again, nearly 3X the price without lens, LCD, etc. This is a camera priced and featured to compete with the HVX and EX1 and it blows them out of the water. All the whining is shocking and some of it is so ignorant it is laughable.

This is an HVX for half the price, a sensor that is twice the size and AT LEAST 3X the resolution (HVX is 960X540). The LCD is bigger and most likely much better quality.

IMHO this positions RED perfectly in the market.
