On ENG cameras we have typically had controls for ND filters and controls for gain. Of course more ASA speed (higher gain) means more electronic grain.

Perhaps the M sensor, like SLR sensors can be adjusted for gain across a wide threshold?

If so then to quickly reduce exposure instead of an ND filter we could just reduce the gain to say -20 enriching the picture reducing gain and saving ourselves from an external filter in a matte box sort of change when going from indoors to outdoors for example. The changes in sensitivity could be both the gain settings usual to ENG cameras and also the little filter dial....
Our digital slr adjusts to 3200 gain at the other end more than equal to the Super gain of a SONY or PANASONIC news camera for getting that dark in the cave rescue shot

This has previously been discussed a little earlier (see above)with no real answer but not for the needs of ENG type shooters.

Agree completely - this would be extremely valuable for any sort of outdoor shooting where light conditions are constantly changing.

I don't know enough about the electronics to know whether this is simple to achieve, or whether matching clips in post shot at different effective ISOs would be a PITA.

Who knows if it is possible or if the RED Team has implemented - variable EI speeds? But what a wonderful replacement for the silly filter dial on ENG cameras. We could adjust for either the perfect iris for maximum lens performance or for wide open to minimize DOP when we want to.
I hope this is done as well as our Nikon!!!!
If RED does this, it would be so cool, I would think they would be trumpeting it...

Similiar thread in RED Camera has had some very techhy reasons why appearantly this won't work!!!!
