What does this mean in focal lengths? And how much does it differ to 35mm sized sensor-specifications?

Announcing the zoom range and speed makes one think they are pretty far along in the dev of the lens. They could have just said it will include a zoom lens.

So, does this "8x" means zoom speed?

He meant speed as to the fastest aperture of the lens. The "8x" refers to the total magnification from the widest to most telescopic ends of the lens. As far as I know, we don't know the mm equivalents yet for those extremes.

Yeah, I'm very interested in the focal lengths too....I just hope the wide end is wide enough that I do not have to question buying Scarlet.

5-40mm would be a nice 8x range for me.....
Like 20-160 in 35mm slr terms
I do worry about getting a sharp wide angle on an 8x zoom though......

As it is a 2/3 sized sensor longer focal lengths would be my choice to get less DoF.

I agree Muroshi. Like the HVX200, its a wide zoom, but all you want to do with a camera like that is shoot on the telephoto end of the lens to get a shallow depth of field anyway. I would rather sacrifice the wider portion for the tele-portion to be increased.

but with the reality of the target market for this camera, it will remain on the wider end for indie film/home users.
