With all the lens testing going on I was wondering about a few things.
I have 5 Nikkor lenses which should work fine. With the RED Nikon lens mount this should get us going until we can figure out what we really need. Since the RED chip set is bigger in pixel size to my Nikon D200 - could we expect at least as good as video quality that we get shooting stills now?
And I guess the big question using still lenses is how will they match up from a color/contrast point of view? I would assume we will need to shoot a chart
after we switch lenses in any production using multiple lenses? In still photography it is not that big of deal - but in video I know I have to CC shots
sometimes just between the wide and close from a zoom lens. Has RED shot any video using Nikon lenses?
Thanks

Hi,

How good they will look is anyone's guess. You need to wait for Red one & test.

Shoot a grey chart after lens changes.

Hello Stephen,
Don't worry, RED users will be the first to see what we are shooting!!
Thanks

Hi,

If you know the answer why ask the question?

How could anyone possibly know until a side by side test is done between a D20 & a RED.

With a RAW workflow any color diffrences associated with your lenses would be corrected out in the initial one light processing. That being said I shoot campaigns on my D2x all the time using a wide variety and vintage of Nikkors and have never seen any noticable color shifts from lens to lens. This is probably because all Nikkors since the 70s have basically the same coatings, there are some exceptions like the new 200 f2 VR which uses Nikon's new Super coatings but overall I don't think this will be any sort of issue as long as you stick to one lens line.

I used to white balance every time I changed Nikkor primes on my HVX/M2 set up. I got a bit sloppy after a while forgot to do it and then realized that it made almost no difference.

Thanks guys, thats what I wondering. I have shot tons of stills and processed RAW. The reason I asked the original question - has RED shot any video with Nikon lenses - is because that is what we are going to do first. I would assume if RED was coming out with a Nikon Mount then someone at RED must have tested a Nikon lens of two with the RED. I really do appreciate what Evin has done with the lens testing and gives us a baseline of knowledge.
Evin is RED #199 so if possible in June? maybe we can see some stills with the Nikon lenses and 4K RED frames....

That's the plan, along with as many other pieces of glass I can get my grubby little hands on.

There was a still posted a while ago back on DVXuser of a nikon lense mounted on the Red cam at the time using the mysterium sensor.

I can't find the link but I saved the image and reuploaded it at dvxuser, here is the link to it (1.00mb so I didn't bother posting it here).

(cut)...

If I'm not mistaken, the Nikon D200 has pretty much the same sensor size as the Red One's windowed 4k sensor, verses the full 4.5, and a similar pixel count.

Evin or someone can maybe confirm if I'm correct?

Cheers,
Damien

Yes I believe you are correct earthling, the D80 and D40x are cheaper version with the same sensor in I believe, but I'm no expert.

Greetings earthling! (sorry, couldn't resist)
I hope you and Paul are right, because a decent Nikon body (D80 or D200) is on my to buy list. If the sensors match up, all the better for when I shoot stills as plates or story boards.
