Why a thank you?
Because I'm 100% confident that the additional build costs are justified.
When has Jim ever tryed to pull a fast one on his customers?
Everything that Jim has produced has been worth 6x if not more than what it was sold for, aside from the Lemo cables.
So I say, 40k? 50k?
Sign me up.
Like I've always said.....In RED I trust.
And thank you so damn much for making my SS trailer dream come true Jim.

Count me in Alexander. I actualy think that the epic is the real RED One.
It's the cam that the RED team wanted to put out right from the start but the couldn't because of problems with their supliers and processor speeds etc.
Remember, nowadays computerspeeds double after one year. So now something like the epic is possible where one year ago it was just some month to early.
I think Jim and the team realy want to improve the red as fast as possible.
Not that it isn't any good, I love the cam, but they probably realised that they could make it even much better within just a few month. Jim is a camerafreak just like us. He only wants the best and coolest tool to work with. So there they go and make an even better RED within a year.
I'm totaly stoked about the epic. I love the RED One an I have shot the best pictures of my life so far but the epic is going to be my ultimate dream cam.
So thanks Jim and team to make this possible. It's a hell of a ride so far.
Cheers
Tim

I agree with the original poster, but I don't think RED One like it is today isn't the camera Jim originally envisioned.
Au contraire, I believe he said countless times that he was very surprised in a good way with the results they got from their camera.
I think he achieved he's original vision of making an affordable 4k camera, and Jim is very satisfied with how the RED One turned out.
He just now got a vision of a 5k camera ;-)
(Just kidding, or not, I'll let him decide about that)

Jim once said that if he had to shoot on Red One (the version he had at the time) forever he'd be happy or something to that degree. Having said that I don't think he'll ever be satisfied and that's a good thing for his customers.

I think the RED One is more than what Jim originally envisioned, after all we're talking about a camera that records RAW 4K footage onto an 8GB SD card....
That's astounding in itself.
Epic is sure to be just that, EPIC.

Your are right guys. The RED One is more than what they put on their specsheet one and a half years ago.
But during the process they realised, that they easily could go bigger within a few month.
Personaly I never thought that they would put out a RED Two so fast. I was expecting a new cam in the next 2 years. I just think that they just smelled the blood and wanted to like finish the RED One. Make it kinda like perfect. Because the epic is somehow perfect. On the specsheet of course.
Oh and yeah, computer speeds double within 18 months. So this still would make sense.

Sooner or later RED will have to go beyond the price point that many "independent" film makers can afford for a camera.....
That's not to say that there won't still be cameras like the RED One and future revisions of it for the indie market, but I think Epic will serve a "higher-end" market, one that is thrilled with the RED One right now and will be astounded with Epic.
I for one feel that it's a very smart move on the part of Jim and RED to chase after an ultimate RED. People have to realize that there will come a point in time where Jim can't cut corners on production costs in order to deliver the top of the line in digital cinema.
It's inevitable and only a matter of time before it happens.....Let papa Jim show us what he can do with an extra 20 grand popped in there.

Yeah, let them go for it.
40K is still very cheap. Most Sony HDCAMs bodys are more expensive but cant do what RED one does. So imagine the epic. The epic is for real production companys, moviemakers, commercial filmmakers etc. But even for a decent indy production it will be ok price wise.
We are talking about a 100K Camera investment. Even here in Switzerland almost every normal 3 men production company has such an investment in camera equipment. A well equiped IMX Camera for broadcast use will easily go up to a 100K. So what are we talking about here.
So lets do it RED

Hey don't forget that Epic is just a mockup and not finished product, so it fits in to those 2 year, because probably first delivered cameras will be in beta testing but in your hands :construction:

sometimes I think some people would like it to be so expensive nobody but them would have access to it. if people want to compete they should do so on talent not the ability to afford a camera

If or when Red puts out a $100K I think a lot of male DPs are going to cream there pants.

We have two products available under $20,000, one of those under $4,000
The reality is EPIC is priced very reasonably, even by RED pricing standards.

At the end of the day, this is exactly what separates people, so I don't know why these kinds of comments are still being made. There is not going to be a huge divide between SCARLET, RED ONE, and EPIC in terms of image quality...only the person behind the camera and processing the footage will determine the difference.
The camera really isn't an excuse anymore, thanks to RED.

Who wouldn't want a RED One and a RED Epic? The Epic will be great and I hope we can afford one (and keep 291). The RED One is the camera I fell in love with at first sight. You always remember your first and I wouldn't want to give that up.

I went to NAB, walked the booth for half an hour and thought that RED had absolutely nailed it in terms of the product mix.
After I recovered from the REDEYE flight on Thursday I logged onto REDUSER and couldn't believe the BS flying. What's wrong with these people?
I sincerely feel that once build 16 is out and debugged, if the whole world stopped making cameras I would be perfectly happy shooting with REDONE #206 for the rest of my life.
Yet, you can put me down right now for a Scarlet - a perfect companion camera to the REDONE, and I will seriously consider EPIC when the time comes, as the price is still extremely attractive compared to any of the competition - and the full credit makes it even better.
Jim, Stewart, Jarred, Graeme, etc. - so far you've batted 1.000 so keep going and just let the others catch up when they figure it out. (And don't take it too seriously when numnuts like me complain about accessories cables and such). What I saw at NAB totally convinced me that RED isn't a one-hit wonder and I look forward to going along for the ride.
Again, thanks.
(BTW Alexander my cable comment has nothing to do with yours, I complained - maybe a little obnoxiously - to Jarred about getting some longer cables a week or two before NAB. But as far as the price (if that is what you meant) check out having the LEMO cables made (I have... which is why I have begged and cajoled to get longer ones from RED.) you will find RED's price for LEMO cables is extremely fair. )
