What is the popular wisdom for dealing with this? No red clothing under tungsten lighting? Is there a better solution?

Ok I guess the answer is using a hot mirror. Can anyone confirm that this is an effective solution?

You're a little vague here. A lot of cameras and monitors have a tough time accurately representing all kinds of colors.
The only reason you'd need a hot mirror is if you're using ND filters. The hot mirror solution is usually for ND .9 and greater situations.
If you want the most accurate colors in an interior shot then the better solution is probably using daylight balanced lights.
If you're trying to maintain CocaCola Red under tungsten lighting... hmmm... secondary color correction.

Using a "hot mirror" with tungston lighting is a must. I have had the same misfortune of shooting red with tungston before knowing this. The color red shifts to magenta and pink and things start getting funky. The tungston fixture creates a lot of infrared lightwaves that the sensor is very sensitive too and the color red reflects those light waves more then other colors, there is another thread completely about this. It doesn't matter if your using ND's or not, you need to use an IR Cutting Filter "Hot Mirror". It will make your footage look surprisingly better.

Huh. Well that's news to me, thanks for posting that.
What filter was successful for you?
