I have a Mac Pro 8 core 2.8Ghz, 6GB memory, ATI 2600HD card (standard)...
QT 7.4.5

The computer is only one week old

I am using it for verifying and backing up RED material on-set but both the QT refrence files and REDCINE are choppy?

REDCINE plays back fine until movement then it gets hacky, not even the QT Medium files can be played back in Real-time??

Any suggestions why

Do you have a dedicated media drive and are files on it ?

I get around 15 ish fps in Red Cine playing off an internal Raid stripe with r3d files.
Can only think thta you have your files on the boot drive.

quad 2.66, 5 gig, ATI 1900

Maybe 6gb is a strange # try 8.

The media files are both on a e-sata raid (g-tech) and internal harddrive... so the drive speed should not be a problem.... Do you think that I should upgrade my graphics card?

I took out the stock RAM when I upgraded to 8gb (taking out the stock 2), and that sped things considerably up.

Noone else seems to agree, but barefeats...

I have not tried to re-insert the stock RAM after recent systemupdates.

For anything but games and 3d renders, the ATIs seem tom be the fastest under osx due to driver issues in OSX

I agree - and certainly that Motion shootout seems to confirm that.

fwiw - I still have the 2x512 stock ram put in slots A 3+4
Slots A 1+2 have 2x1 Gb Crucial
Slots B 1+2 have 2x1 Gb Crucial.
Slots B 3+4 empty

Ram is sooo cheap now I may just go ahead and max it soon.

Do you think that I should upgrade my graphics card?

No, you have to go through configuration hell and find a combination of OS, Quicktime version and RED utilities that works well for you...

I think so too, - must be something else that's causing some headbashing.

Heck a 2k proxy is butter for me.

Hey - post your full specs.

OS, Qt etc - also I must say this.
I have always done a fresh install on my boot disc - never any other way - takes a lot longer, yes.

Maybe you did a Migration to install ?

dont upgrade your card to Nvidia - yet. Trust barefeats.com - ATI, even though 256mb is STILL faster than all nividia and the OLD x1900 512mb - for the pro applications like - FCP Studio package.

but you could possibly get a speed bump by removing the "old" 512 mb clusters and only use even sized clusters - even though that would leave you with 1 gb less ram. - its the EVEN sized that matters.

but as robbo wisely said and videoteque said - maybe its the combination of QT, Redcine, OS...

no migration..

mac os x 10.5.2

2.8 Ghz quad core x 2

ATI 2600 HD 256mb

6GB memory

QT 7.4.5

fresh install

250gb + 2 x 1TB HD

Can I just remove the memory without any problem?... turn off the computer and pull it out?

I have 2 x 1GB + 2 x 2GB....

I have 4x2gb sticks fitted as described, as it means I can add another 4 later.

Just had another thought - mahvo.

Any chance that you have 2 monitors hooked up to your 2600 ?
That would halve the vram - might be the problem ?
If you do - unhook one and see how you go.

I use 2 all the time...
