Sorry for the basic question...

Is there any way to get the RED ONE to output standard definition video? As far as I can tell, this isn't possible. There isn't a menu option to set the HD-SDI outputs to output a PAL (SD) SDI signal, is there?

Nope. You'll need a down converter.

I wish to see the option of switch the HD-SDI out to SD-SDI out too, because in certain remote situations you can not cable bind the camera man to the video village. Therefor you need to route the signal wirelessly - which is still expensive and often simply not available.

Imagine steady cam operation.

We use AJA HD10MD3 (http://www.aja.com/html/products_converters_HD10MD3.html)
Works great, but the price is $2,500...

Blackmagic released a bunch of mini converters are really attractive prices an NAB, sadly a downconverter was not one of them.

I stopped by their booth and complained about this ommission, they said the mini converters are firmware updateable so he'd talk to the engineers about adding downconversion to the hdsdi to analog box

AJA just cut the prices on their mini-converters, as well as releasing new ones.

This would be big with me also...shooting handheld in a Helicopter, feeding an SD signal to the pilot's on-board monitor (so he can see what the shot is help the move, etc.), makes it go a lot easier. Just more convenient as the pilot's own monitor and cableing is already in place.

seems like it is done

they released a USB firmware update for mini converters :
"Added an HD to SD downconverter to Mini Converter SDI to Analog with a choice of letterbox, anamorphic 16:9 and center cut 4:3 downconversion modes."

more info and firmware update download at :

That's the SDI to analog that we need to buy, right? The price is 495$, frankly lower than the AJA.

Anyone has tried it? Is it rugged? Is it easy to power?

Yes its works , but for me better to buy AJA . At this moment price is around 1000 USD , also you can found second hand AJA . For me aja is working great for glide cam job .

Why is it better? We've been using AJA but it died last week. I believe it's more rugged but it's too expensive for what it does.
