I'm curious as to why they are still shooting the bulk of the movie on film. Is it just because the Red isn't getting released until after they start shooting?

Dear RED Boss Mr. Jim Jannard,
may I lift up a fire after Moscow that CHINA can come after to choose the RED ONE digital camera for all the digital Films in China.
CHINA will have 2000s Digital screens within 3 - 5 years, and one thing that the recent CHINA 's policy that every framer should watch at least one new D-FIlM each month.
As a local CHINESE named STEWART CHONG in HKSAR / CHINA and I have deeply involved to make it happen soon after April or may be in 1st of MAY for the CHINA's labour DAYS.
If JIM can allow me to have the 1st RED ONE in HKG / CHINA right after NAB 2007.

Great news. I'm curious what "digital component to the filming" means, though... Hope he's going for a filmlook with Red, not video... For example, we've all seen the difference between Michael Mann's video look and what Fincher is going for with the Viper(Two of my favorite directors by the way). If the first Red footage stands out as video it would be a shame...

Will the RED footage be used to do seamless cuts between it and the film shot footage? Or is the RED footage intended to have a different look from the bulk of the film for some kind of effect?
For me this is a big thing because it is one thing for RED to be able to produce beautiful images. It is a completely larger leap ahead and will really make people take huge notice if it can be cut with film and be indistinguishable.

I would think you would have to grain up the RED footage for it to match.
In essence I am thinking of RED footage as a grainless 35MM transfer that
is rock solid for VFX work. If they start in April we should be hearing about whats up soon after NAB.

I'm more concerned that the film footage will look too grainy next to RED's smooth as chocolate pristine footage.

The "smooth" or "less grainy" RED footage will be looked at as more of a bad thing then a good thing by many at first. There will be many that say it doesn't look like fim. Now I am not bringing up an arguement of what looks better as that is completely objective for each viewer and there is no win to that argument. What I am saying is if RED one is going to get quick recognition as an excellent choice over film it will be because it can replace film without being able to tell the difference. If LUT's can be designed to match film stocks and a grain match for that film stock can be added to the RED footage then look out KODAK.
Now over time I feel less and less grain can be added to slowly get viewers use to clean digital footage but at first I feel it needs to come as close as it can to being a match to film. So back to my question for the RED team. Do they plan to seamlessly cut the RED footage with the film footage?
Steve Gibby
03-22-2007, 04:33 PM
Shoot REDCODE RAW, tweak it in REDCINE, use custom LUTs to get the look you want, post it, deliver it...then if you want/need to, use the same RAW footage, tweaked and posted a different way, for a different look, post that, and deliver that...and again...and again...
It's all about flexibility and options...start with clean images, then custom-tweak them as needed for each project...
IMO RED One will heavily impact the stock footage market also: shoot 4k REDCODE RAW @24fps and 2k REDCODE RAW @60fps (high-action subjects), deliver via HDD to stock house, they can use REDCINE to custom tweak each order for licensing the footage, and down-res as necessary, without corrupting the original file...a huge leap forward...
Great news about WANTED! The first of many high-profile projects...

I finshed an HD series last year for the BBC called "Maddigan's Quest" on the Varicam (not the highest res of HD by far) and before the shoot I watched Constantine. 3 weeks into the HD shoot I went and saw Constantine again and was struck immediately that it suddenly seemed so grainy. It doesn't take long for people's perceptions of grain to shift from romanticism to just seeing it for what it is...noise.
But of course if that's the look we're after to suit the material we're shooting then of course we can always "noise" it up a bit. :shifty:

Jim,
There's a movie I've been hired as the DP, I'd be more then happy to give Red a full run. It is a low budget thriller utilizing mainly students, may not be the kind of project your loooking for. It shoots in the last week of May and all of June. The story is about a young female law student who is in a class where their assigned unsolved cases to investigate. She gets a 20 year old murder that happend on campus. As she investigates things start pointing toward her Dad, the Dean. The more she finds out the more people start dying. There won't be any big names, though the executive producer is Fritz Kiersch, director of the children of the corn. I'd gladly use my red one, but I'm too far down the list. It will be shot in a hitchcok style, so we could exploit and showcase Reds capabilities.

There's a project that I'm affiliated with right now that would have brought some great recognition to Red. Unfortunately, the fear of the unknown won out. Basically not enough time to get the camera in the hands of the DP and camera ops so they have some time to mess around. But you would certainly recognize the names of everyone involved. I'm hoping there might still be a way to shoot some behind the scenes footage with it, just for kicks. How funny would it be if the behind the scnes fotage looked better?

I gotta be honest, I was hoping that a small-time independent (perhaps a community member here) would have the first crack at making a film with the RED ONE, but I realize that's not how things work in the real world. Respect amongst the film community should prove to be quite advantageous to us early adopters.
Congrats RED team on all your hard work and diligence! RED's all growns up!

Jeez haven't you ever encountered a cheapskate millionaire? In a lot of cases, that's probably how they got to be millionaires!
Not that I'm saying they're all like that, but I think most people's notions of rich people's attitudes to money come from TV shows and movies, whose writers probably don't get to mingle with the well-to-do all that much!
Why WOULD coming into money change you all that much? I'm not rich by any means but I could easily afford to get someone else to service my car or mow my lawn, but I still prefer to do it myself.
More often than not, you do encounter a certain common "attitude" from the rich, but that's because 99% of the people who try to engage them in conversation are on the scrounge. I think it's a rare and wonderful thing to be actually able to directly contact a real billionaire on this forum, with a reasonable chance of getting a personal reply.

I don't know what the big deal is... It's not a great movie, just like the first one, IMO, but a VERY different one, including aspect ratio! I watched in theatre back in January of last year, and remember having a good time, but after walking out of the theatre feeling disconcerted because it was SO different. Anyway, there's an audience for every movie...
oh, and the $4mil budget was INCLUDING the ridiculous amount of advertising all over (for the first movie).

it's good to hear that CHINA has ordered RED one, ( 2nd round after IBC 2006 ? ) and I am in the ( Special Adminstration Region in CHINA ) - HKG. We have more than 5 RED One in HK alone as far as I know, As a 2nd generation CHINESE in HKG, I do aware that CHINA has a long history but may I say that HONG KONG has a long history too in making international Films.
( Remember Hong Kong Star - Mr. Bruce LEE in the early 70s in the western movie world ? )
Take advantage of HKG's film making little KES
( Knowledge/Experience/Skills ) + " Freedom " with CHINA's resources are not a bad idea to make Public Victory for the Indiewood.
I was told that from a one stop D-FILM service provider in CHINA that China hope to please Framers to have a new film each month to watch.
I discussed scripts for the RED films @HKFILMART 2007 last week in HKG as well.

FYI, "Bazelevs" is misspelled as "Bazlevs". Must've been a typo.

I guess you'll see Day Watch soon enough: http://www.apple.com/trailers/fox_searchlight/daywatch/
Do not expect anything special and you'll enjoy it more than if you come with some expectations of greatness or such. It's pretty slick though...
