Yeah...I second that. I'm thinking about ordering another Red One just so I can have two EPIC's sooner than later.

I can't wait to find out what the details of EPIC are.
I'm still just getting to know REDONE and its not even finished.

Me and my production partners now own six RED ONE cameras, with a seventh one on the way. We'll keep some of the RED ONEs, and trade some of them into the purchase of several EPICs. Like Offhollywood, I've been shooting with RED ONE for over seven months now - it's been a fun ride, and the footage has rocked.
As a near 8 month user of RED ONE now, I have no doubt that EPIC will also seriously rock.
BTW - we'll also order several Scarlet cameras and several RED Ray units too. The way cool thing is that now REDCODE will be vertically and horizontally integrated and maximized through all of these products. I lay awake at night now thinking of all the concepts and ideas for integrating all of these cameras and RR into some of the same productions - and it blows my mind!
Oh well...sleep is overrated sometimes anyway...

Similar story here... we're very excited about getting the Epic into our inventory. I suspect we'll also keep several of our Red One's... but the Epic seems to pare down the feature set to exactly the sweet spot for what most of our clients are asking for, while adding a few goodies - like high frame rates at full res and reduced skew - that everybody will appreciate.

Yes, I would like to think I would keep my RED one and get a Epic but my operations is too indy for such options. Who knows where I will be when Epic launches. As for Skarlet, I would pick up 5 of Mark. :)

Yeah the epic is my baby. The dreamcam.
I just finished shooting the first swiss Red musicvideo. We shot a lot of 2K 120fps. The slomo looks great but I miss the 35mm Dof. The epic will give me that back. 100 fps in 5K and probably 120 or even more in 4K. That's what I've always been waiting for. The epic also will be lighter, that's very cool. I'm no siss but a fully rigged RED with a bigger lens gets heavy fast.
So the epic is gonna be the bomb at a decent price point.

I do hope EPIC allows for shooting different resolutions but at FULL FRAME.
I don't like messing with my optics.
The nice thing about the mock up of EPIC is the control at the back, no more "hell"stick like on REDONE.
Anyone know when we'll find out more about EPIC from the horses mouth?

Any word on how we are suppose to line up to buy our Epics and Scarlets? I could see following the serial number line based on Red One purchases, but how will that relate to Scarlet purchases?
Any thoughts from anyone in the know would be appreciated!

Yes, the elimination of the joystick is a nice touch. To bad the controls are still on the rear where we have to work around cables and not on the operator side of the camera. :glare:

Offhollywood intends to buy 6 Epics the moment they are ready.
You can consider that a PO Jim.

I'm in with a handful of Scarlets - As far as Epic goes I can see the real beauty in that. I can see grabbing one or two. However - I also don't want to discount the idea of being able to upgrade our Red Ones either. If Red keeps to the idea of upgrading - whos to say we can't also turn our Ones into 5ks. And the Red Ray is a no brainer.

i believe for Epic - they'll go by Red one serial numbers ..
for Scarlet ? i think they said they'll have enough inventory to meet demand.

I've had pretty different feelings about Epic. I think it needs to beat film in DR and do 14 stops or double the FPS to 240 to even approach being worth double the price. Eh...

Epic is, well, epic.
Count me in. but let me first squeeze all I can out of the RED ONE. this thing is such a MONSTER image maker in the eyes of every other "HD" camera on the market it's...well....sick.

My plan is to go with Epic when it comes. Still at double the price of the Red, it's far less expensive than any other camera out there in the digital cinema realm.

Guess, nobody has any idea how much power EPIC will require? The good thing is the smaller weight and size compared to Red One. Hopefully that's not counterbalanced by the power packs.

What something is "worth" should be based on ROI. How fast does it equal ZERO?
I assure you that when EPIC is available, projects with decent budgets will demand it. EVERYONE will be shooting RED and rental rates for the REDONE will be VERY low. It does not take a rocket scientist to understand that Major motion pictures and commercials will want EPIC over RED ONE.
EPIC offers better dynamic range, higher resolution, smaller and lighter. A product that incorporates everything that the RED TEAM has learned building the Red One.
To me, at twice the price, it's just right. Still cheaper than a Varicam or a F900, it's priced high enough to create some separation between "high-end" professional service providers and others.
So, respectfully Shawn, I disagree. Even if the changes in image quality are MINOR - it would still be a great investment at that price. A much better investment than the RED ONE IMHO.
People want the biggest gun.

I'm in on EPIC, too, it seems, after a chat with my business partner.
2 Scarlets and an epic when they come up.
Whether I'll swap the RED or not is an open question. But I think I might, just because of the expebsive milage it will have by then. (since I received it, this is the 2nd day only I will not be out shooting for hours.)
But I'll try to squeezze every little cent out of RED untill then.
Keep it up!

There will be much water under the bridge until EPIC will be released.
Nonetheless I can clearly see the need of a RED camera positioned above the REDOne. If RED is not doing it someone else will do it.
Apart from this REDOne is in its current status a brilliant tool and truely revolutionary. Any camera that follows will be rather an evolution than a revolution.
Personally I wait and decide later. In any case EPIC seems to be a bargain - at least from todays point of view.
One thing amazed me most about Epic: The ability to trade in my by then old REDOne for the price I purchased it.
This is revolutionary - again.

I agree with shawn I think it has to have better DR and Faster FPS. lighter is nice but not sure that alone would swing it. I never quite understood why some people want the tools to be more expensive or out of the reach of all but a few but not so much so that only studios can afford it.
if you want to stand out its better to do it with talent and ingenuity rather than the size of your wallet. part of the reason RED ONE is a success is that so many people could afford it. well more than could ever afford a high end sony camera. so its probably the most beta tested camera in history at this stage with so many eyes on it.

In my opinion EPIC will cost what RED ONE should have cost if RED wouldn't have offered RED ONE at such an unreasonably low price point. The natural follow-on thought to that is EPIC at $40k is underpriced if you seriously analyze the initial specifications for the camera, and then superimpose those specs over a performance-to-price index for all similar camera systems (good luck finding one).
Those who have a RED ONE, and beyond their production skills, also know how to effectively market their services, and want to trade their RED ONE into an EPIC, should have no problem generating the revenue to do so.
The decision to adopt EPIC is a business decision - pure and simple. Those who feel their business can benefit from the lighter weight (thus increased mobility), higher resolution, higher frame rates of EPIC, and other features of EPIC should seriously consider the upgrade. Those who own a RED ONE, and feel their business model can't justify adopting EPIC should stick with RED ONE, consider upgrading the sensor to Mysterium X, and go out and generate maximum income with the camera.
RED will be fully supporting RED ONE looking forward. It will continue to be a dynamic 4k/3k/2k camera system that has broad and deep production utility.
IMO no RED ONE adopters should feel abandoned by RED's announcement of EPIC. RED ONE, especially when upgraded to Mysterium X, is an extremely potent revenue generating machine. If you're a one-person company owning a RED ONE, my advice for revenue generation would be to analyze all the multiple genres and sub-genres of cine-style and EFP-style production RED ONE is capable of being used in, and then plot a course to get your camera involved in as many of those types of productions as possible. If you operate yourself, spread your skill sets to match what RED ONE is capable of. Very few RED ONE owners and/or users have skill sets broad enough to maximize what the camera is capable of. Final advice: market your services constantly, by every means at your disposal. If you live in a small market area, plan to travel a lot for work, or simply move to a larger market area. As a lifestyle choice, I live on the California Central Coast, half way between L.A. and the Bay Area. The price I pay for that lifestyle is traveling for work about 25 days of every month. If you want to reach your goals, and/or support your lifestyle, there will be some sacrifice involved.
In the right hands, people with progressive attitudes, and broad skill sets, EPIC will also be a potent revenue generation camera. So will Scarlet.
Open your minds to ways to utilize camera systems, spread your skill sets, and market your services effectively - and you'll be surprised how exponentially your business will grow!
Side note: Our production group will order at least eight EPIC cameras, retain around four RED ONE cameras upgraded to Mysterium X (we own seven RED ONE cameras right now), and order at least ten Scarlet cameras.
