View Full Version : Reduser Vacation?

Maybe Jim is right. We should all take a big break from this forum. Since I got my camera I realize how much noise there is here. There is a great amount of speculation and frankly a ton of BS.
Every issue I have had (all minor and mostly operator error) has been resolved by RED support (thanks guys) in a timely manner and I have felt no need at "outing" red on reduser (fueling speculation) for how they handle problems (I can only actually praise them for their service).
There is also a lot of fantastic information at REDUSER, but it is very hard to sift through the amount of noise of late. (for instance I think threadjacking is a huge problem).
It would be nice if more people used their real names instead of hiding behind handles. If this was a slightly more helpful place where users came in less defensive and more interesting in bringing positive solutions to questions asked. People would never be allowed to behave this way in a room face to face.
I have been guilty of jumping in to posts to quickly, making dumb comments or posting "chatter". I have had to remind myself of online rules more than once. There are very basic rules being broken here all the time and that can make it a bit of a drag.
So I can see why Jim would have just tossed in the towel for a while.
NEGATIVITY brings the whole forum down. There are very constructive ways to complain/bitch/whine and cry. It would be nice if people were a tad more constructive when posting and replying.
Some of you might know me from my Creative Cow posting. I wrote an article on COW etiquette (online forum etiquette) that could be useful here.

Anyone else want to join in for at least a one week break from RED USER?
OK. I might lurk but I won't log in) :)
I'm with ya Jim (not a fanboy statement).
See you back here soon.

So I can see why Jim would have just tossed in the towel for a while.
As far as I know Jim didn't toss in anything. Sounded like he just got tired of all the bullshit floating around at NAB. Red was the talk of the town...but most of the talk was by people that have no idea about the camera and that are still in disbelief that it even works.

Happy to say I missed most of the fireworks due to NAB.. And I think I'm just going to stay ignorant on all of them.

I'm also considering a time-off from RedUser...
Meanwhile, I'll be at DVXUser. :)
No, seriously, most of the essential stuff is clear. It'll take time to learn more real info from the RED guys.

NAB was great, the energy in RED's tent was palpable, your hair was standing on end. For me, Scarlet and RED Ray is where my next tax refund is going. :D
Having said that, on Tuesday we ditched the rest of NAB and went shooting in Zion National Park. Beautiful scenery, waterfalls being blown into reverse rip curls by the wind at 120fps. Utterly astounding. That's what it's all about, my friends. Our little RED ONE doing the magic.
Get out there and shoot. Sure beats wading through FUD posts. Reminds me of just how incredible a time we all are lucky to be a part of.

I think we can all agree Reduser has become less of a classroom and more like a pub.
I think its good for everyone to step back once in awhile to gain a little perspective on the big picture.. not only in relation to this forum but in relation to other aspects of life.
The drama can be addictive to some.. and mob mentality under a somewhat artificial anonymous cloak can be incredibly seductive and make many people express themselves very differently than they would in the real world, throwing stones without consequences.
Unfortunately, rocks are rocks and it doesn't matter if we at RED can see who is throwing them or not, they hurt us just the same.
At any rate.. lots of good feedback from you guys over the last couple days.. Stay tuned..

I think I'll stay right here and help Jared open up a few of those empty classrooms...
Everyone needs to remember that constructive aid is always beneficial. Let's all think about staying here, helping each other, setting an example for the new members, and being respectful of everyone here.
RED User is one of the most cool and progressive online boards I've had the pleasure of being a part of. RED Team are my friends. Please be respectful of their feelings when you post. These guys have put their heart and soul into RED for over two years now. Most of them work 18 hour days six and sometimes seven days a week - all to bring us excellent new tools to use in our trade. I really respect these guys for what they have done, are now doing, and what they will do in the future. IMO they're unbelievably cool...
Isn't it time to heal the divisions that have come up this week? Let's not let a few unruly people ruin the RED User we have all contributed to for so long. Please join with Jared, me, the moderators, and the vast majority of members here in making respect and consideration a circular experience here. Let's join in with the moderators and police ourselves.
Please stay here, post, be respectful, and contribute from your knowledge and experience.

So I've been at NAB for a week, just got back. What has happened? I've only managed a few glimpses via the iPhone. Are people just out of whack that Scarlet doesn't have an interchangable lens or is something else wrong? I was personally blown away by Scarlet and the team's forward movement. Plus it was awesome to see the team. So I can't fathom what's happening here.

RED Digital is creating and distributing disruptive technology. Some people, like me and many of my fellow RedUsers think that's frakkin' amazing and are over the moon about it. Others feel threatened. The dichotomy between those viewpoints can create a volatile atmosphere.
Within the context of this forum I have had the good fortune of sharing ideas with some amazing artists and thinkers. Challenging paradigms is an inherently stimulating part of that exchange. I call on the entire RedUser community to preserve that active marketplace of ideas by keeping the discussion about ideas and treating each other with great respect at all times.
In most cases its as simple as phrasing your posts in such a way that when you disagree with someone you dissect their argument not their character or professional credentials.
Before I get off my soapbox I ask all of you to put yourself in the shoes of Jim and the Red Team before you fire off a blast - this isn't a smackoff its a tech forum for gentlemen and gentleladies. Its also a rare opportunity to contribute constructively to the evolution of our tools.

Reduser became very big in the last couple of months. I believe thats one of the reasons we see so many new subforums. The s/n ratio in those "special interest" categories is incredibly good compared to any board I´ve ever seen.
So, the entrance "Red One Forum" grew into a pub, thats right, but what do you expect when the Red thing is snowballing like it is right now?
Lots of new people, lots of missinformation. I personally dont think that its going to harm Red very much. Sooner or later everybody is exposed to some sensational Red footage, and thats usually it.
My soccer mom post was only half joking at this. I´d bet that the HDV crowd is already showing up. Thats a different mentality right there and quite different fights than "Does it look like film?" are going to arise.
Anyway, when I dont really have time for my reduser addiction I search for posts from Jim, Jarred, David or Gibby (and some other people - oh, where did my break time go?). That usually brings the noise level down to HighFidelity.
Cheers,
Jochen

Gibby,
Once again, great post. Agree completely.
It was great meeting you and Jarred both at NAB and hanging at the party. Met a bunch of guys I only knew from the Forum, and that was a treat.
But I'll think I'll join the group, take a break, and come back later.
I came back from NAB yesterday, logged on, and suddenly it's like someone left the back door open and all the rif raff came in. Very weird. Seemed to build up right before NAB and then, just when Red brings out the most innovative and promising cameras in the show, the kids start talking shit like they know something. It sucks reading threads with nothing but drivel.
Personally, I couldn't be happier about what Red is doing. Sure I'd like to see this and that improved, but hey... let's give these guys credit for what they've done for all of us.
We just shot our first day of a 3 day shoot with my Red, which we got Friday before NAB. It was a great experience. The camera performed flawlessly. We shot a ton of setups on sticks, dolly, Steadicam, exteriors, interiors, a train... and got great footage every time. Isn't that what it's all about?
I've been pushing Red in the SF community for a year now, and it did my heart good to see it make a great first impression with some of my best crew members on the first day with a brand new camera. I have no doubt that this camera will be a workhorse for us.
THANK YOU for building such a awesome tool and starting this revolution.
To Jim, Jarred, Jon, Ted, Kelly, and all the Red team -- AWESOME show of passion, creativity, and guts at NAB. Epic, Scarlet, 18-85, Red Ray, the Mattebox... all rock! Glad to see the 'pro line' appear. I look forward to what's next.
So don't listen to the noise. Keep the faith.
And everyone on this forum, PLEASE contribute. Don't attack.
Peace and love,
M

I find it sad seeing that after RED announces Scarlet, Epic, and then RED RAY, three revolutionary products that are changing digital cinema and how we make and view movies are now getting scrutinized for already awesome products. The people I met from RED at their booth were THE nicest people I met on the floor. I felt like I actually meant something to RED and wasn't just someone walking around floor gawking at products. Everyone at RED made a point to say " Hey Nathan, glad you could make it, or Hey man" and answered any questions I had. It felt more like a close circle of friends, or even a family of enthusiasts all supportive of one another. I look forward to every morning when I wake up and sign onto REDUSER before getting out of my bed, seeing what other people are doing with their RED's, learning more about RED and the workflow, and helping people to the best of my ability. Lets all work with one another on keeping REDUSER a place where everyone feels welcome. Thanks.

It was a bit of a joke of me yesterday on whichever thread I was on, but maybe it's a serious idea: this forum purely for talk specifically on details about the cameras and workflow etc, and another forum for, let's say, the more personal stuff, that people clearly need. The way things go now, it will become harder and harder to find useful information in between everything else

I agree that too much has been said without thinking and giving thoughts some time right after opening the NAB. I must admit that many thoughts expressed without hesitation here went through my mind as well when finding out there was new camera "the Epic" coming up.
Finding out later that also the Red One gets a new sensor relieved my mind.
I think it's fair to say that many people have been posting without taking even a very slight time to think it over, but on the other hand I do think the Red Team made a mistake in communication here....
The surprise element of the Epic may have been a nice shock for people not allready having ordered the Red One. I can understand panic reactions of the ones that allready did. Those feelings and thoughts went to my mind as well.

While I have my own questions about Scarlet, I'm going to wait until closer to release to make any comment.
Also, I'm resisting the urge to answer a few of the ignorant fools and clueless snobs posting nonsense in the Scarlet forum. Not worth it.
If the succes of the 'fixed lens' EX1 is any indication...I think that most of the tens of thousands who've been making a succesful living with fixed lens cameras are going to absolutely love Scarlet. Whether it's indie movie makers, WEVA types or just plain curious. Their numbers are huge compared to RED owners.

Those that can, shoot. Those that can't, bitch. I've been thinking for weeks that everyone needs to simply shut up and just go shoot!

I agree with all of you on this thread. For myself, I know that this forum has been a wealth of information and help when I needed it. I have recently received my new baby and needed advice on monitors, sticks, heads, etc. etc. And every time I posted a request someone has answered. As I begin to learn how to use this new tool and run into questions or problems, I know that help is there if I need it. I sleep better knowing that help is just a click away and if the forum can't solve it Red is there. Kinda gives a guy that warm fuzzy feeling. lol Thank you all for making my entry into this industry a whole lot easier. You have saved me countless hours and most probably untold dollars. As I gain more experience and problem solving skills with the Red equipment and processes I look forward to returning the favor.
To Jim and the team - try to focus on the fact that you did indeed sucker punch the big boys - Sony Pany and JVC at NAB. They never saw it coming. Congratulations!!!
