View Full Version : RedCine > DPX > Color

I've read that some people prefer going from RedCine to DPX format for grading in Color. How does one go about this? Color won't let me import them. I also tried importing tiff files, is there a way for color to read those linked together as clips instead of as individual frames?
I'm quite familiar with FCP, but I'm new to color. I'm sure I'm missing something here. Any help would be appreciated.

If you export an EDL from FCP you can use it to conform the DPX files into a Color timeline. Getting out the other end back into FCP is a bit trickier; so far I haven't been able to get Color to create a correct FCP sequence, I think it's choking on transitions...
If you're going to film or have Glue Tools to wrap DPX files, you could just render from Color to DPX then take it from there.

There's a workaround...
Go to AJA and download the AJA codec and DPX qt - wrapper.
Take your DPX sequences and wrap them.
Allign in FCP
Send to color now works
Gunleik,
Do you need Crimson to do this?

I will try this, my friend! Wasn't aware AJA codec was freely available.

Crimson to conform the cuts, still... Try it (5 cuts limit). If there|s something that is undoubtedly worth every cent, it|s Crimson.

I also do the same workflow (when needed) export XML from FCP, open in Crimson, export redcine XML > Load shots > Export DPX in individual folders > Load rendered DPX into Crimson > Export Roundtrip XML > Translate DPX to Quicktime with AJAQTtoDPXTranslator> open in FCP relink DPX > Send to Color > Grade / Send back to FCP > Export Colored DPX (with transitions, effects,etc...)
I cant wait to get Gluetools, it was much more elegant even though I tried a demo with a watermark.
You can also drop .tif files into the timeline by making your default still image to be exactly 1 frame... then send to Color, then back to make the final Tif export.
Couldn't work without Crimson, I love that program and its rock solid...!

> Load rendered DPX into Crimson > ......are you loading the rendered dpx?...did i miss something(serious)..
i guess you are importing the overwritten redcine.xml to get the roundtrip

yeah, If I send to FCP I can check everything before going to Color, I guess I could open the roundtrip in Color though...

Now that I just tried, your right! Color wont take the roundtrip it needs to reconnect... I never tried it that way so now I know its not gonna work. I still like coming back to FCP just to check everything went smooth with the timeline that was sent to Crimson.
